I already had a decent Trajan Decius with a Genius reverse, but I was bored with it. I saw this listed on a dealer's site for a great price and unloaded my other for some profit and got this. I mainly wanted this for the reverse since it's a better Pannoniae with clasping hands compared to the other Pannoniae reverses. Trajan Decius (249 - 251 A.D.) AR Antoninianus O: IMP C M Q TRAIANVS DECIVS AVG; radiate, draped & cuirassed bust right. R: PANNONIAE; the two Pannoniae, veiled, standing right and left facing one another, clasping right hands in front of standard between them. Rome Mint, 251 A.D. 22mm 3.2g RIC IV Rome 26
I can't say I see anything boring about the genius type naming Illyrica or that I understand why Pannoniae shaking hands are better than those in other poses. RIC says they are rare? OK. Mine are from the group RIC assigns to the Milan mint but I believe that was found to be an error when someone found a die link between one of these short form obverses and a Rome style reverse. This is just another case where worshiping RIC is not a good idea. There are a lot of variations on a rather few basic types under Decius. Specialists might pay more unless they just find them accidentally which is always the best way to get 'rarities'.
I consider it scarce only because I couldn't find many others online. Not on CNG, other forvm members galleries and a few other places. I see the other types of Pannoniae everywhere. I also happened to like this reverse better then the Genius type.
nice lookin' trajan d mat! i recently posted my new (and only) trajan d...so i'll refrain from posting again.
Terrific coins Mat and Doug----and I don't see anything boring about either unless I had a pile of all the same types LOL... I really like 7-C's Tet as well. My Antoninianus has the Dacia reverse:
My only TD, looks like my two are not speaking, let alone holding hands Trajan Decius Coin: Silver Ant IMP C M Q TRAIANVS DECIVS AVG - Radiate, draped & cuirassed bust right PANNONIAE - The two Pannoniae standing front holding standards Mint: (249-251 AD) Wt./Size/Axis: 4.66g / 24-22mm / - References: RIC 21b RSC 86
Doug Smith's coins are quite scarce and what makes them scarce is the obv. legend - IMP CAE TRA DEC AVG instead of the regular, common IMP C M Q TRAIANVS DECIVS AVG. Here are some more scarce to rare Decius Ants: These have the rarest obv. legend: IMP TRAIANVS DECIVS AVG, which is a short, early, fashioned after Philippus type obv. legend. These were both minted early in Decius's reign, sometime in the last quarter of 249AD. AR22mm 3.35g - DACIA type, RIC 2b (photo courtesy of Cerberus Numismatics) AR22mm 3.73g - PANONIAE type (only one Pannonia), RIC 5 (photo courtesy of H.D. Rauch) And this one, which is also at least scarce - has a slight longer variation than the IMP CAE TRA DEC AVG, the IMP CAE TRA DECIVS AVG which is quite uncommon paired with the DACIA FELIX reverse. This was minted most likely in 250-251AD. AR24mm 3.51g RIC 37c (photo courtesy of US dealer)
Great new coin, Mat! Interesting reverse. I have only this one coin of The Other Trajan. He looks rather sad about that . Trajan Decius Rome mint, 249-250 AD antoninianus, 22 mm, 3.7 gm Obv: IMP C M Q TRAIANVS DECIVS AVG; radiate bust right, draped & cuirassed Rev: ADVENTVS AVG, Decius on horse riding left, with left hand raised in salute & scepter in other arm Ref: RIC 11b, RSC 4, Sear5 9366
Im aware of the legends, Seth, but good reminder for others who don't know. And great additions everyone.
