My Brother-in-Law recently found a 1921 D Walking Liberty Half Dollar and left it with me to find out the value and try to sell it. He found it in the ground while digging a foundation for a new house. No telling how long its been in the ground. All I did was rub the coin with my fingers to remove as much dirt as I could and I found the coin to be in great shape. If anyone could let me know the best way to sell it would be I would greatly appreciate it. Thanks, Matt

most people here will tell you we need pics and to not rub it or clean it. there are ways to get the dirt off and i am sure some one can ellaborate. value really depends on condition.

Howdy Matt - Welcome to the Forum !!

First of all I want to let you know that you are walking a fine line here with your posts. Offers to buy sell or trade are not permitted on Coin Talk except in special areas. However, I am willing to give you the benefit of the doubt in this case because you are asking about "how" to go about selling the item instead of just trying to "sell" the item. So to answer that question, I would first ask you - do you have an account at ebay ? If you don't, then your best bet would be to sell the item to a dealer.

As for the grade of the coin - VG8.

No, I am not trying to sell it here. I am not a coin collector and am just trying to figure out how to sell the coin and get the most out of it. I stopped by a coin shop in Lex., KY and he said it was worth about $160. I thought that quote was suspect because I saw them going for much more than that on Ebay. My first thought was to list it on Ebay and I do have an account and buy and sell regularly on there. I was just wondering if there might be a better auction site just for coins that might get it seen by more disciminating collectors. Just a thought. Thanks

You might get more on ebay than what the dealer offered, but I'd say he made you a fair offer. The coin has some minor corrosion damage and any collector who knows the coins will see that right off. So while you might get more on ebay, you might not.

Matt, One thing I might be concerned about going the ebay route: no matter if you've sold and bought a lot of items and have big and good feedback some people (myself included) would look at the kind of stuff you are into and it would seem odd that somebody that has dealt with anything BUT coins would be listing a key Walking Liberty:confused: . My opinion is go the dealer and start haggling, I just don't think you will do as good on the bay. Good luck to you!

I don't know much about the shops in Lex. but in Richmond there is one---the guy has a nice little show and makes pretty good offers....
I'm not sure what he would offer on this one but it is worth a try--Tell him Spencer sent you.

IMHO, if you have a good Feedback rating, put the coin on eBay and explain that the coin was found at a Construction site by a friend and that you are selling it for your friend! The only other things that you will need are a couple of great pictures of the coin and a Reserve Price that your friend could live with, in case it sells for less than the low average value of what other1921-D Walking Liberty Halfs in the same condition normally sell for on eBay.

It really shouldn't matter that much whether you have sold coins before on eBay, as long as your Feedback rating is high! I should know, as I have sold everything from Hunting Bows to Binoculars to Rifle Scopes to Gas Masks to Cameras to WWII items to Coins and much more on eBay with no trouble!

I don't know the best path for you to take. If it was me, I would probably get an eBay account and at least try and sell it that way. Start the bidding at the same price as the dealer offered you (or slightly higher to cover eBay fees) and see if you can get more for it. eBay does have some fees you'll have to pay to list and sell it...but it shouldn't be too bad. Its worth at least looking into it IMHO.

One thing I should tell you (that I don't think as been mentioned yet) is: what ever you do, DON'T clean that coin. You will substantially lower the value despite the minor corrosion it already has. No soap, No silver polish, No rubbing, No nothing! DON'T clean that coin!!!!! (I can't stress that enough).

    Good luck selling it.

There's also a really good dealer in Louisville. When I lived there I used him all the time. He's on 3rd.

I'm among those who would be suspicious of someone who'd never sold coins on eBay and then popped up a listing of a rare numismatic item. I would have no way to validate the "selling for a friend" story. Sorry, just calling it as I see it; I'm not looking for one of these right now though.

    Excellent find nonetheless!

I would put a minimum or reserve bid so that if you do not get many bids you will not lose it for a low price

I too think ebay is the best route to sell the coin. It has nice details, and even though it has some surface problems from being in the ground, I think it will bring strong money on ebay.

I think you'll find the bidding intense on e-bay, esp for a better date coin.
