I'm very new to this and trying to learn... Is this considered a die crack? The crack continues around the wing (very faintly) almost to the rim. Any thoughts?
Die cracks are actual cracks in the dies, which would leave the coin raised up where it was struck. IF your coin were to be an actual error, it would be a struck through error as the area is depressed on the coin. It is hard to tell from the photo but I'm guessing that's just a knife or staple scratching through the coin.
Thank you. I will read about struck through errors. The "scratch" seems pretty deep and continues faintly to the other side. Curious about the way it follows under the chin so perfectly.
Focus on the sides of the scratch. I am hardly the expert here, but there should be absolutely no raised areas around it. The way it follows the chin leads me to believe it's a scratch as that's a natural flow.
The photo is kind of blurry, but a better close-up would be needed. If it was a scratch, it would be visible on the letters as well, but that doesn't appear to be the case. Chris
