I personally have reported SO FAR myself sense December of last year, 24 count it, 24 counterfeit Seated Liberty Dollars, passed off as the real thing by sellers. Now I myself am an eBay seller, however I do not understand why when someone gives me the heads up why I do not take it down, but then I think about what some of you said about it being financially in their favor and then I say to myself, of course I'm not gonna take it down, because that would mean I would loose money. Well I will give eBay some... and only some, because out of the 24 I reported, they removed 3! Its a miracle!!!! I watched as eBay let the other 21 go to buyers. This is just an unfortunate act of life I say, another hit to collectors I'd say. Now as for the three that did get pulled, they were somewhat good in their deception to a beginner but to all of us we would have spotted it a fake right on, due to the poor quality of the details and lettering of the coin. The one that frustrated me the most was a 1865 dated dollar where the date wasn't even using the correct font of the time which really just made me shake my head. The other very similar to this was a 1843 and the four was an OPEN FOUR? what?? LOL!! I couldn't help but laugh before I called on this one. I really wish I keep the pictures because it sure would have made you question how it even made it to $100 before being pulled.

I am a silversmith and I was selling at a swap meet. I had a reproduction of a bear claw and a man asked to see it. I told him it was not real and it was marked as not real on the price tag. He worked for the state and he called the police. They took every item including my tables. They kept all for over 3 months while someone at the state finally said it was a fake. I had to drive over 100 miles to get my jewelry back. They will get you real quick but aren't in any hurry to give back. Sounds like ebay doesn't it?

Sometimes it makes you wonder what's cheaper - hire a couple more experts full time or have a blown up lawsuit over counterfeits. You would think Ebay should have learned their lesson after having a 'warfare' with Louis Vuitton. I am sure more than a few people here would love to have a chance to work at ebay removing such counterfeits.

Until then some sellers will continue to make their monthly income by selling counterfeits and some buyers will continue to lose out.

All I can do is to continue informing potential buyers over such counterfeits.

If you don't have the authority to step in a force action public shaming/embarrasment works better than just about anything else.

And what might widespread public shaming over knowing helping in the marketing of counterfeits do to stock prices? What large investor what to be known as someone owning stock in a company that facilitates fraud?

The shaming has to be PUBLIC and widespread though. Broadcasting it just in the relatively small coin collecting community won't do it.

They had a group that removed counterfeits, and when that group did their job eBay lost millions of dollars in profits. So that group went *poof* real quick.
They are not concerned with lawsuits because old coins are not the product of a brand or company that can sue them. Their buyer protection policies also protect them from individual lawsuits. I think overall they make more money off fees for fakes sold that buyers don't realize are fake until too late, than they do paying out claims to the small percentage who realize soon enough to file a claim.
