I have updated my site on late Roman AE http://esty.ancients.info/ricix/index.html with images of types of Valentinian III which did not previously have images. Types 72 and 77 are rare in good condition. Type 72: VOT/XX and type 77: VOT/XV Although there must be numerous examples (because RIC only calls it "scarce") I think most must be in terrible condition because examples as good as these are very hard to find. Many AE types from the late period (RIC IX and X) are common in high grade, which is a good reason to start collecting the coins. Nevertheless, collecting the period remains interesting for decades because there are many types, some of which are elusive.
My only Val III is so terrible I can't tell that it is Val III. I am only going by the seller's attribution. These new updates look marvelous Warren. I can heartily recommend Warren's link above to all, but especially those new to Ancients.
Great updates. Everyone here who knows me well knows I am passionate for Roman coins of the 5th century.
Yes, type 75, http://esty.ancients.info/ricix/type75.html an AE2 for Theodosius II and Valentinian III was very rare until well after the Iron Curtain came down. Although it has mintmark CONS (Constantinople) it is only found in the Crimean region (north Black Sea, in Ukraine a bit ago, but recently annexed by Russia) and was either sent directly there or actually minted in Cherson. Most Theodosius II and Valentinian III coppers are small and in bad shape, but this rare type, usually in bad shape and never full and high-grade, is an AE2.
