Something happened in 1912 that was responsible for two major changes in the United States of America.

Both were political changes, but one caused a numismatic change.

    A. It happened because New Mexico and Arizona were admitted to the Union as full-fledged states in their own right.
    I. Arizona became the 48th state.

    a. two stars were added to the flag making 48
    b. two stars were added to the 1912 20 Dollar Gold Coin (double Eagle) totaling 48

    Courtesy of Coin Facts, here's images of a 1911 $20 and a 1912 $20:

They also added two more stars to the rim of the 1912 $10 Indian for the same reason.

You are right 900fine and I welcome your reading and commenting, but this trivia was only about the double eagle and no other coin. The change in the Eagle was going to be covered in a future trivia, but, alas, that now, will not happen.
