Hi everyone! It's been a while since I have posted anything, and these pictures are from a couple of years ago, but I was wondering if anyone had any input on maybe what grade this coin is and whether you would recommend me to get it graded. Thanks! And if there are any questions I am happy to answer them.
I'm afraid I don't have any expertise in gold grading, but this one appears to be near MS. The question I have for your is what would you get it graded for? Do your other coins have slabs and you want it to look alike? Do you worry about dropping this one or letting youngsters handle it? I'm not certain it would make the value of the coin go up any.
AU - 58? (I don't know a lot about grading coins, but I sure didn't think it was that high. I was leaning more towards XF.)
Doesn't matter much. The difference between AU58 and XF40 is all of what, $50-75? You probably would want it to be MS before slabbing it becomes a good financial move.
I wanted to sell it, which is why I wanted a better idea of what grade it may be. (And to the other collectors, I'm not selling out haha. I wanted to upgrade to a finer, slabbed Indian Head.)
All the more reason not to have it slabbed unless you're sure it's MS. You'll need to invest $30-50 in slabbing fees, postage, and insurance just to get it encapsulated.
Pretty nice luster, but a little wear on the eagle's shoulder. I agree with AU58. I would not grade it unless you think it would go for MS62. MS61 are selling for about $300 or so, and raw you MIGHT get $270, so selling raw usually is best if it is not pretty high grade.
Rusty, not being very experienced at grading these, I wonder how it could grade 55/58 with the giant flat spot at the top of the wing. Could you please educate me?
I just don't see any major wear anywhere else , so I chalked it up to a weak strike and minor wear in that area . Now if we were grading ANA standards it might warrant an EF-45 but I'm going by TPG standards and market grading . Though I've been known to be wrong plenty of times . Though a better pic would help as I have no idea of how that flat area on the upper wing got there . That's why it's really just an educated guess with pics .
Remember this is the incused design of the Gold Indians. Therefore these wear spots show up after there is wear on the surrounding fields and edges. I am thinking XF-40 to XF-45

I'd just really, really like to get a defined grade on this (as much as I can through pics of a raw coin) so I can get a better idea of what I want for it.
