I bought one of this type a couple of years ago. I like the coin but honestly don't remember bidding on it! The invoice arrived and I do remember the auction in general but I have no notes regarding research or intent to bid. No regrets... it's a pretty type. Roman Republic, Anonymous Rome, 115-114 BCE AR denarius, 20 mm, 3.91 g, 10 h Obv: Helmeted head of Roma right, X behind, ROMA below Rev: Roma, helmeted, seated on two shields, holding spear before her, she-wolf standing right at her feet, head turned back, sucking Romulus and Remus. In left and right fields, two birds flying towards her. Ref: Crawford 287/1
I like this issue and would like to find one I can afford one of thes days. In the meantime, here is a another Anonymous type: ANONYMOUS ROMAN REPUBLIC AR Denarius OBVERSE: Helmeted head of Roma right; behind, X REVERSE: The Dioscuri galloping right; in exergue, ROMΛ in raised letters within linear frame Struck at Rome 214-213 BC 19.8mm, 3.45g Sydenham 140. Crawford 44/5
Samb very nice coin, welcome to the darkside.. Tif the memory is the first thing that go's, i can't remember the other things that go.
So if memory is the first to go, and you can't remember what went first, then how can you tell which went first? Oh and awesome coins all.
That's a coin I would like to acquire for my "she wolf series" Good catch TIF, your example is very nice ! Q
There is one for sale in the Agora Auction which ends tomorrow if you are interested. I would have bid, but I'm sticking to my guns and waiting till July to buy my next coin(s) (did you notice that? coinssssss?)
I love this coin and consider it a great example of 2nd century BC Roman artistry! So beautiful! Anonymous O: Helmeted fead of Roma right, X behind R: Roma, seated right on shields, holding spears; wolf standing right at her feet, head turned back, Romulus and Remus, in left and right fields, two birds flying toward her. Crawford 287/1
I agree and that is a nice example save for the wolf head. http://www.acsearch.info/search.html?id=1372637 http://www.acsearch.info/search.html?id=2139455 Compare those two and see how much a wolf head is worth.
Beautiful coin JB....... and I'm stunned by what Doug's link suggests a 'wolf's head' is actually worth!! Amazing!!!
