Hey Guys, This weekend I received a nice surprise from my family friend. He got laid off from his job, and had to work at quick check for a while as an in between job. Nevertheless my mom went out to dinner with them, and when i got home she gave me (2) 1964 quarters. I guess it pays to inform friends and family that pre-64 coins are silver. I never found a silver quarter for my whole collecting career so it was a good weekend. So, my question to you is what coins have you gotten from friends/family. Thanks for reading, Jason P.S. My family friend has gotten a job in his field again which is great!
I'm glad to see there's a happy ending to the story. I loved working the register as a kid searching for silver and Wheaties.
i was trying to complete a JFK set of half dollars. my wonderful wife stopped at our branch bank and asked if they had any halves. she brought home a roll of walkers bought for face value. none was a rarity and all were probably VF20, but that occurred when silver was about to peak over $35 per ounce, so I took her to dinner or did some chores for her trying to pay her back. she has not struck "fools gold" like that since, but she still brings home the occasional uncirculated post-2000 JFKs, and many of the more collectible ones like 1982-1987. i work a counter in iowa city while in grad school about 1974-76. we collected all silver cause people still had it to use. you could tell without looking when a customer slapped a silver dime or quarter on the formica counter because it rang differently than clad. we put all those in our pocket after replacig them in the till. unfortunately, when the Hunt Bros. spun the market in 1980, we sold about half of what we had without checking because collecting had not yet infected me. of course we made quite a bit more than we surrendered. it helped that a baby Hunt was in my brother-in-law's frat here in tulsa cause we had some insider trader and sold just before the false rise fell. it was fun though.
