Thanks, Martin! A study case is as what I had imagined it would be. Could you let me know where this fake is recorded?

If there is one fake, the chances are there are more. I hope not, but there it is.

WOW !!! That appears to be an EXTRAORDINARY lot of assorted coins!!

They all seem to be in high grade and gorgeous to the eye---and some scarce and rare types as well...I should be so lucky to fall into a group lot like that LOL

Sounds like you got a bargain for what you have and what you probably paid---and you could still sell off those that you already have and don't feel any real connection for ---I recommend the firm of Bing and JA LOL

    CONGRATS "Z" !!!!

I don't know how I missed this thread, but its got me on the edge of my seat !!!

I'm as amazed as anyone that such a phenomenal assortment of coins could be sold as a 'lot'...but glad they seem to be genuine and glad it was one of 'us' who lucked out...

Hopefully, only a precious few are fakes or modern replicas...

Good luck anyway. I see this lot as a superb gift. I don't know why I have this feeling.

There is, and I've just started on my own fake checking and will eventually likely send the half dozen or so most valuable coins off to Sear to be very sure.

This was likely the sale of either part of the entirety of a single collection so to discover a fake really comes as no surprise (purchasers of our own collections in the future take note!), but to be fair to this group of coins as well as the seller it was clear to me even as I bought the group that this was one of the odd ones out even if not explicitly described as such - it was one of eight coins in the group that were not tagged with individual numbers and grouped together separately from the rest of the coins. All eight are either so worn as to be almost unattributable or of dubious authenticity and they were the ones I had pegged with a $0 value when I was working out the potential value of the lot.

Thanks, Mikey. As some have already suggested it's likely the executor of an estate had just consigned an entire collection to the auction house, and I can imagine instructions to have been along the lines of "sell them quick, leave none unsold". It's a fun group, some surprising scarcities and some common ones of almost eye-popping quality.

Well, once again I love this place => I am still scared-******** of bidding-on group lots (thanks brother)

    ;)

Oh, but good luck Z-Bro => we're all still cheering crazily for this to be a spectacular score!!

Thanks, Steve, I will hope for it to be a spectacular score, but it's already proving to be fun and educational :).

well, hopefully it doesn't end-up being a stupidly expensive "fun and educational" lesson (I like you)

I have quite a bit of buffer built in for some stupidity, but many of those I'm going through closer now look good. Your man Sear will probably have the last word on some selected ones.

I am less worried about the fake Greek since it was in the 8 grouped separately. If I were to die today, someone would find a pile in a drawer that includes a handful of Slaveis, a worn out but genuine Antony legionary and a couple other junkers that I just never cared enough about to deal with. The fakes are not marked so it would take someone of your ability to know that they were not part of the collection which all are in envelopes with ID's and a collection number.

The word from Sear would be interesting but I still want to see the photos that would allow a reasonable opinion.

Since the name of the game is pick the ones to send to Sear, I see nothing suspicious about Hadrian. I'd send Balbinus for the opinion. When all is written, I'd be surprised if both were fake and not so much if both were good. The standard line is that we can be fooled by photos but I don't claim that I'd do better with coin in hand in this case since the photos are so good.

There aren't any matches in the fakes databases. I am leaning towards two great coins.
