The coin is in bad shape and looks like it has been whizzed and/or improperly cleaned. To me, it's not worth more than melt value. Chris
Thanks. Agree. I was looking for a solid AU but this one looks off and I don't like the ding on her cheek either.
It really is a shame that people ruin over 100 years of history by cleaning it. Probably was a nice looking coin before it was cleaned.
I've looked at dozens or raw and graded 1896-S Morgans. They are either way over priced for my budget or really rough. The search continues!
What are your budgets? Message me and I can make some private suggestions--I have been collecting Morgans for over 40 years, and as a young collector, way back, I experienced a lot of the same problems. The 1896s is a conditional rarity--it is not wildly expensive in lower grade circulated coins, but gets very expensive in higher grades. I WOULD NOT start collecting Morgans with that date.
Thanks, I have a good number of Morgans now...this will actually be a fill in date for my collection...around 55 to 58, possibly ms60
