The coin is in bad shape and looks like it has been whizzed and/or improperly cleaned. To me, it's not worth more than melt value.

Thanks. Agree. I was looking for a solid AU but this one looks off and I don't like the ding on her cheek either.

Agreed. AU details, cleaned. Also, lots of rim bumps.

Very harshly cleaned with an abrasive. AU details. Not worth more than melt.

It really is a shame that people ruin over 100 years of history by cleaning it. Probably was a nice looking coin before it was cleaned.

If the coin were a horse, I would say it was ridden hard and put up wet. Ugh!

I've looked at dozens or raw and graded 1896-S Morgans. They are either way over priced for my budget or really rough. The search continues!

That's the great thing about collecting: your coin is out there, you just have to keep looking!

There are plenty of nice, circulated Morgan's that would be in your budget, and are not mutillated.

    I have the same situation.

From Bowers guide book for morgans..."the 1896 S is still high on the most wanted list"

What are your budgets? Message me and I can make some private suggestions--I have been collecting Morgans for over 40 years, and as a young collector, way back, I experienced a lot of the same problems. The 1896s is a conditional rarity--it is not wildly expensive in lower grade circulated coins, but gets very expensive in higher grades. I WOULD NOT start collecting Morgans with that date.

Thanks, I have a good number of Morgans now...this will actually be a fill in date for my collection...around 55 to 58, possibly ms60

Good luck on that one--$4000 for a nice MS date. :)
