COIN AUTHENTICITY

I've had this little ring for a while now and was wondering if the coin in it is real or not? I've always figured it was a replica but never was sure.
It's about 9mm in diameter and looks like silver.
If it's real I'll cut the ring apart and remove it but if it's fake I'll just leave alone.

For once, my brother and I disagree. I have no idea if the coin is real or a replica; however, if it is real, it does not belong in a jewelry setting IMHO.

BTW, I do not recognize the coin. I wonder, if it was to be removed from the setting, would it display the letters "WRL" stamped along the edge, or an "R" somewhere? These would be certain indications of replica.

Nice , can't wait to hear from the Dark side if it's real as it's one cool coin . Though it does look like it may have been cast .

The coin doesn't look ancient to me - maybe it's the pic, but the fabric just isn't right. For one thing, it doesn't look like bronze or silver, more like pewter. The Greek letters don't make any sense to me. Can anyone make out what they say? Here's pic of the letters right-side-up...



I make out pi, omicron, something something, theta, eta, sigma. But in that orientation, the bow and club are upside down from what I've seen on bow and club types. I just don't think it's a coin.

 

I have to lean towards JA's opinion on authenticity---I think it's a replica too....but I could easily be wrong.

The details look a bit too 'sharp', but there are always examples that surprise you. I have a few 'replica's given as X-Mas stocking stuffers and they all have the same appearance that suggests a coin of more modern times----although mine clearly have the word 'copy' inscribed as required by law.

 

I agree that something seems awry ... here is my example for comparison

But the OP "coin" has Athena on the obverse. The only Macedonian type that comes to mind with Athena/Bow/Club is an issue of Kassander, but on that issue Athena faces left - at least on all the coins I've seen.

Would a test to see if the ring is even gold help . I mean would they put a real coin in fake gold .

 

I also have an Alexander and club reverse--but a bit more modest than Steve's...Has anyone been able to find an example like the OP coin, with Athena and the bow, club reverse??

I have not located a single example, silver or bronze, that depicts Athena with that reverse---they seem mismatched and therefore probably fake.
