I've been looking at this 1925 Australian Penny. The second hardest one to get. It looks real to me compared to all the counterfeits that I have seen but I wanted everyone's opinion. It's the first one of these that I have actually seen priced fairly. Here's the one I'm looking at. I feel the obverse field looks off. Could be some light corrosion. I also feel the 2 is a little off. Other then that I think it looks good. The details look right and the wear is equal to the grade. And Here's an authentic one.
Nopers. It looks like it was cast and some of the metal flowed from the lip to the denticles. Guaranteed fake. No question about it.
I would have never guessed you'd have to worry about a fake on a coin like this. I still need this one for my collection too. When I look closely at it, I'm wondering if it means anything how there is a difference on the king's body. In the authentic one he has some sort of belt with decorations on it I think. On the questionable coin it kind of looks like random designs with no real shape. Is that something or am I seeing too much?
Sadly we need to worry about fakes with everything. I think his Sash is alright. Honestly the main detail looks good to me. It's just the smaller things that throw me off.
Given that everything else looks right, I'm chalking that up to wear. That coin has been around the block a few times. Hard for me to believe that a counterfeiter would get the small details right and then bungle the largest thing on the coin. I'm still going with genuine.
I asked them about this and this is what they said. "We are assure you it's real - in fact it was purchased at Spink & Son London some 40 years ago along with a collection of fine British and Commonwealth coins including a large selection of early Australian one penny tokens"
No offense bud, but that doesn't mean anything. And more importantly, if their grammar is that bad, how much can you really trust them. And if they are willing to address the denticle issue on the obverse, they wouldn't be making such broad statements. Let me put it this way, I wouldn't spend MY money on it.
haha I know that it's just words. Could you imagine someone actually saying "oh yea, you're right, you caught us." I think I'll pass.
I think you're making the right choice. One other thing to keep in mind, because I know absolutely nothing about Australian currency -- Didn't you say this is the first one in awhile that hasn't been priced astronomically? There is probably a reason for that; all the smart collectors are saving their coin money up for when the next real one hits the block.
This coin was priced at about $90 which is a little high for the grade but not terrible. It seems they usually go for $150 at this grade. They're not terribly expensive but I was hoping I could get one cheaper (don't we all). Thanks for the help everyone! I think I'll be patient and save for one I know is real. I could buy this one. But I was thinking about it and the whole time I owned it I would have that nagging doubt. Not worth it to save a few bucks.
Look at the bust. It literally has gaps in the design that are all the way down to the level of the field. Some letters like the P in IMP are mis-shapen. The bust design and dentils are very crude and irregular. There is no way this coin is genuine.
