I have recently started collecting French coins, trying to have a type collection of first year of issue for each type. It's a daunting task trying to find them in good shape, but keeps my wallet in check. I'm not convinced they will do better than a US collection, but I've always collected what I want rather than where I live, so there you have it. A few for fun: 1f Morlon 10c Dupius 20f Louis-Napoleon
For the variety and the history (I'm a bit of a history buff, particularly British and European history). I love U.S. coins as much as the next guy, but since I don't collect date series, ultimately my options are limited. I started getting into world coins decades ago, and now focus mainly on world crowns and coins of the British Empire. I also have a 20th century OFEC collection that I started with my son several years ago. Strictly affordable, base metal "fun coins". He's off to college now and lost interest, and so did I pretty much, but I still play around with it occasionally. It's a relaxing counterpoint to the more serious stuff. I'll probably never bother finishing it. One of my favorites, Ceylon 5 rupees:
I agree with most of you say here and don't have much else to add. But like you said it's a wait and see game. I just hope we can save our hobby if it comes down to it.
Stunning examples, mate! I just took some photos today, but I'd say yours are a good deal nicer than mine. Let's add this in for my German piece...might be right up your alley.
Wow, those little 2 Franc coins in both sets are knock outs. Stuff like that is hard to find!! Here is one of my latest, a British Pound 1985:
All the French and German stuff mouth watering, the 5 Rupee Ceylon, is very difficult to locate especially in the grade seen in the above posting. In fact it is the only one I've seen. But then I have yet to explore that nation's coinage. Impressive....
Great looking coins! I do have some "rearing" horse German coins myself. Below are just a few (I think I have a dozen or so total).
I once thought my Canadian silver dollars, I bought in the late 1960's, would go to the moon, based on their super low mintages. But, alas, I've given up on that, it's all about supply & demand, and the demand just isn't there for world coins, like it is for U.S.
Good point. Indeed in looking over the thousands of coins available, many have little demand. And, the demand shifts, kind of like a fad, or what's "hot" at a certain moment. I have some coins (not Franklin mint) circulation coins, which were minted in the LOW thousands, and little demand exists for them at the moment. But should they become popular, the prices will skyrocket -, to the moon. I own them because I like the image of the guy on his tractor!! Even if only several hundred collectors want them amongst the millions of collectors worldwide!! Many collectors worldwide, are just NOW coming on-line, their presence is a new thing, and will impact the supply/demand aspects. many are just now acquiring computers and on-line access. Patience. Canadian dollars, especially if SILVER, are stagnant. Their value is usually tied to silver's value, regardless of mintage numbers (exceptions exist). To me, and this is a personal opinion -- the true essence of coin collecting, is NOT precious metal content, but rather (1) if I like the coin!! (2) it's historical implications (3) is it big and shiney (4) unusual alloy composition (5) eye appeal (6) rarity (7) precious metal content, and finally (8) unusual engineering aspects. As with stocks, you may want to diversify, but if you do specialize, and proifit is your motive, then you and I are on different wavelengths, which is ok.
many world coins are in demand. it all depends of what country it's from and the grade and of course the rarity of the coins. and of course supply and demand.
yes, indeed. This is proven when you bid on many many world coins on EBAY, the bidding can be ferocious!!
you know why that is ??? it's because the better coins rarely come on the market , but when they do the feeding frenzy begins lol.
Great looking coins folks! I knew I shouldn't have clicked on this post, now there are a bunch more world coins on my wishlist.... Here's a couple of my fav's
and I paid high for it and have never ever regretted it. the grade rarity is 1 thing, but my love for this design is another. when you combine those 2 things you become 1 very happy coin collector. I only feel that way for about 20 coins in my 900 coins collection. my thoughts are changing in the way I will buying coins in 2016.... buy coins you've wanted for a long time. save save save for the more expensive coins on your want list.
