Anyone know anything about this note? I inherited it from my grandmother who wrote that she got it in Winnipeg on Mother's Day 5/12/68.
Well It's not the Devils head. Looks like a regular old Canadian bill. If It was your Grandmothers, hang on to it. Specially if she got it on Mothers day. Save it.
She passed away over twenty years ago and I've had it since. Just never knew anything about it other than what she wrote.
That series of notes circulated from 1954 - 1973. You can see "Ottawa 1954" printed on the note. Canada does not include the specific date of issue on notes. You can determine when it was printed by serial number, but more generally, by the signatures on the note. This one bears the signatures of John Robert Beattie (Deputy Governor of the Bank of Canada 1955-71) and Louis Rasminski, (Governor of the Bank of Canada 1961 – 73). At that time, Canadian notes were printed by both the British American Bank Note Company (as yours is) and the Canadian Bank Note Company. Another feature of all Canadian notes since 1937 is that they are bilingual (English and French). The note itself is very common, but the real value is the family connection. Enjoy.
Thank you, interesting bit of history about the British American Banknote Company. Is there a printer's mark that identifies who printed them?
