View attachment 420409 View attachment 420410 Good story here... I sold a laptop on eBay, and took a big hit mis-calculating ship weight. Buyer was MOST appreciative. We emailed and talked, lots in common. So he sent me a 1922 no P cent. @ least AU 50+. I'm still a rookie with the cam here. Is there a guide for ID'ing die types for this cent? I read this one http://www.lincolncentresource.com/1922Ddievarieties.html but still having trouble. Are there any others? Thanks here.......................... ============================ edit: I don't think he knew exactly what he had; so I want to trade it back to him for something else...
Why would you want to trade back ? These are terrible pictures, but if they are what you say, it is a very valuable coin. You might (Carefully) remove from holder for better pictures. Dave
Yeah, I agree with Dave, will need better pics out of the 2x2. There are four die pairs for the 22 plain, if I remember right.
You typed - no P - in both the title and your comments. But there is no such thing as a '22 no P cent. None of the cents minted at Philadelphia had a P mint mark on them. The valuable coin is the '22 no D cent. Which is of course what your link refers to. So, are you confusing the 2 coins, or did he tell you it was a no P coin ?
Doug, You are sooooooo right. I guess when we get old we (me) jump to conclusions, which are usually wrong. Dave
Yup - no D (no P either ). Typo... Anyway here, cracked the flip and changed the snappics. Sure don't wanna' make anyone angry... "Terrible"? Yeah - I said that. THanks anyway................
Doug, Coin World shows that most Lincoln cents were of the P, D & S mints. The 1922 coin is listed as a D coin only. Doesn't that mean that no P & S cents were minted in 1922 ? Dave
Sure does Dave, there were no Philly cents that year. Brain cramp on my part I didn't even think about it to be honest. I just saw the no P he typed.
Sounds like you were offended. Sorry about that, but for anyone on this site to help you, we need to see clear pictures to analyse the coin.
No, not offended - I already knew shooting through a flip wasn't easy. So I asked for links, just in case no one could see it good enough, to do it myself. And I really didn't want to open it (did so w/out touchin' it tho' ).
I am going to go out on a limb here and say what no one else has said: I'd guess that there is about a 99.9999999% chance that the coin is fake. But, hey, I wear glasses. Look at the edge, it is nearly perfect (no wear of any kind) and nearly PL. Besides that I don't believe it is real. Too tired to check the 3 dies, but...
Man - can't wait to see what an expert says. To me I can't match it up to any of them. My guess is fake - but I could be way off base.
I do not think so - maybe just a trip to a local shop. I trust mine and have a good relationship with them.
Can u take a picture from directly overhead of both the obverse and the reverse please? There appears too be a defect on the reverse that i have seen on other fake examples. A picture of the reverse a little closer and overhead would help
I'll give it a try there gijoe. Now in retrospect, the guy who gave it to me asked me to promise to "never sell it". I think it IS fake... Gonna' send it to a nearby PCGS Dealer.
I agree with others. Does not look like any of the 22 plains I have seen before. Always remember the 22 plain came from overpolishing the die, so they polished the D away. So, these coins were struck from very worn dies. Since yours does not look like a worn die, that is why I agree its a fake.
Ok Guys, I have the answer to solve this question. It is a fake 100%. Take a look at the reverse of the coin, and on the left wheat ear, there is a blip of metal right above the U of United. I thought I had seen this before, so I checked another Thread, about a 1955 DDO. The same reverse die on this coin was on the 1955 DDO cent and a 14D. The name of the Thread where the 55 DDO pics are is called "One of the worst faked 1955 Doubled die lincolns". Look at the coin in that thread, and you will see it has the same reverse die as on this 22 plain. I wouldn't send it to PCGS, and waste your money.
