Found this mint error in a box full of random coins that a flea market booth was selling for 15 cents a piece. The attached image shows the coin alongside a common penny at the top and bottom, and at the center of the image is shown flanked by a penny planchet and dime, all resting on a straight edge for comparison. This coin is smaller than a dime, yet has an edge that is thicker than a penny. There is no noticeable rotation between the dies. Anyone seen anything like this before? Odd error penny. by Bryce Blackford posted Jun 13, 2015 at 8:18 PM
Yes, search for "dryer penny"... apparently if you put a penny in a dryer and give it a cycle, all the bouncing around does that.
Thanks guys. Not the answer I was looking for, but I think you guys nailed it. It must've been rolling around for a long time to eat all that detail off. Still not a bad addition to my collection for what I paid for it!
I wonder how a dryer coin could end up so perfectly round after all of those random hits have reduced its size by that much? I'd also like to see better close-ups and one of the edge as well. Chris
I haven't weighed it yet, but I suspect the weight has to be close to a regular penny. Maybe I can get access to a scale tomorrow. I will try to get a macro shot of the coin on here in a bit.
