Hello all, I live in the Caribbean, the island of St Maarten. Anyways, found this Michigan state quarter which is only brass color and smooth on the Michigan state side. It does have the out line. Heads side seems normal. . . Any info would be greatly appreciated. Thanks
It looks like the reverse was plated with something, maybe gold or brass. Looking at the edge of the coin, it has all three layers as it should, and on the side in question, the rim is silver colored, so must have been plated.
I don't think that's what I'm seeing in the image. I think we're seeing the reflection of the background, making the reverse look silver in this shot. Notice how the reverse in the edge-on shot looks silver, even though it clearly doesn't in the reverse face image. As long as we've got you on the line, @SXM, could you post another shot with the coin at an angle (45-60 degrees), so we see both the edge and the reverse in the same shot?
Yes, but we're trying to decide whether the reverse clad layer is missing, or whether it's simply plated or otherwise discolored on the reverse.
Okay, that last shot seems like a dead giveaway. There's clearly a layer of something on the reverse of the coin, but not covering the rim, and its color is different from the copper layer on the edge. I'm guessing either gold-plated or painted. In either case, it's post-mint damage, not a mint error.
