I'm curious about this coin. It looks to me like someone might have taken a drill or punch to the last two digits of the year. Can someone shed some light on the method and reason why a coin would be altered in this way?

    rickmp Frequently flatulent.

You're right. Why it was done can only be speculation.

Probably because some fool wanted to pawn it off as a 1900 error coin.

So most likely the initial stages of some ham-fisted attempt at fraud?

A flatbed scanner does produce a much better image. I'm guessing based on the way some of the material seems to curl away that it was probably a drill and not a punch.
