Howdy folks I recently got this 1964 quarter , graded MS69 by NTC. I knew the chances of that being a accurate grade weren't very good. I thought it might be MS66 judging from the listing photos .. So what would you guys say is a fair grade for the coin??
65 - 67 range from what I can see but your pictures a bit small particularly when trying to see through the toning.
Ya bad pictures. Can't really tell what might be hidden on the obverse image. I see what could be marks by the eagles right wing but the pictures make it impossible to tell. Update when you.get the coin, hopefully you didn't pay too much just in case you're not happy when it arrives.
Sorry since I use my phone to zoom in, I didn't think about the photos being so small.. You might be able to tell a bit more from these .. It seems there is a pretty big price difference between MS66 and 67, I payed maybe 64 money for the coin to be on the safe side. If I could get lucky and the coin would cross over to a 66+ or 67 it would be a really good score..
From what I can see there might be a hit on Washington's neck and possibly 2 on the eagles right wing.
MS65 to MS66 from what I can see. The biggest hit I looks to be on Washington's neck. Good looking Quarter overall! 64 money is good in my opinion.
Not sure from the pic, but other than what has been mentioned, I'd be concerned about the dark toning from 7 to 4 and speckled in the fields on the obverse. My concern would be, has it gone too far and eaten into the coin? I've owned coins that looked like that, that I tried to dip, which is when I found how pitted the coin was due to advanced toning. So, I don't know, if it has eaten into the coin, left as is, would the top tier graders grade it?
As far as pcgs and NCG go, I couldn't say , I did send a dime into anacs a year or so back that had this dark almost black toning on the reverse. It came back with a clean grade. Im thinking the tone on this quarter may not be as black as it looks it the photo , maybe more of a dark purple/ blue. Or atleast that's what I hope , guess I will have to wait till I get it in hand. Worse case it will still be a nice unc quarter for no more than I have invested in it.
Well, I can say it's certainly very well struck for a Washington quarter. It's very hard to find nicely struck examples. I wouldn't have gone for it due to the dark toning, but that's just me. You say you paid "MS64" money for it, so I'm guessing that's around $10? Given that melt is $2.89, I say forget about what CT says about the coin, and just decide for yourself if you like it or not.
