I was looking at math and science capabilities like MATLAB and I was wondering if an application is available or can be created to track and analyze the value of a personal coin collection. Many people track their collection using Excel or other tools, where they organize their files and enter coins, grades, quantities and values. The values have to be periodically updated from various media. It would be great to have a software application that points to some coin value source (PCGS, online gray sheet, online retail prices - something realistic and reliable) and provides up to date prices to your collection file. Also, the tool can provide analysis to your collection, subsets of your collection or specific coins by tracking value history. Having this tool would simplify tracking your collection and provide information on when to buy or sell.
Register on the TPG sites and they have *free* (junk ad enabled) tracking systems you can use. This is my MS64 Peace Dollar set http://coins.www.collectors-society...etListing.aspx?PeopleSetID=174969&Ranking=ngc
Someone on this website pointed me towards coins.ha.com and I absolutely love it for keeping track of my collection. I'll post a link too but I'm not sure if it'll work. http://coins.ha.com/c/my/collection/index.zx?ic=MyHeritage-MyCollection-121913
There are many web sites offering built in programs that do this. Some charge for it and some are free. But when choosing which one to use the only thing that should really matter is - what is the source they use to determine those values ? You see that's the thing, what good is it if the value information they provide is no good or inaccurate ? Over the years I have looked at and studied just about all of them. Only 1 is even worth the effort of using - Heritage, and all it does is get you close. What people have to realize is that there are only 2 sources of accurate value information - realized auction prices from reputable auction houses, and the electronic dealer network - that's it. Nothing else is even worth the paper it would be printed on were you to print out.
PCGS has a "Fun" free Set Registry where you can add PCGS or other coins. I have not figured it out yet though. I have added 5 coins and I get a record as per below that indicates 5 coins in My Set Registry, but clicking on the link of "Total Coins" or "Coins that don't match" gets you nowhere. The details entered are not anywhere to be found, yet! It may take my pea sized brain some time to work this out!
