The coins below are 3 common date and grade Flying Eagle Cents. These coins seem to be perhaps the most inconsistent graded among the major TPG firms.

The first coin is a long time member of my type set typical coin for the grade. 1857 VF 30 ANACS seems about on target 25/30 the green funk is stable and may be PVC.

This second is in a PCGS slab and the grade may be a little generous I will add it latter if the post has any interest. 1858 Small Letters.

This last is in a PCI gold slab maybe 10 years or so and very conservative to the point of being a little lean grade wise in my opinion. Sometimes the third world slabs have a decent coin inside. This one I like the clashing and lamination. I will add the grade latter if any interest. 1858 Large Letters.

fun to compare a little , grades of course are subjective and opinion.

flying eagle cents rule. still want to get 1 down the road. I can remmember many years ago at a Vegas coin show a dealer asked me if I want to see his new flying eagle cent he just traded for. my eyes went huge and jaw hit the ground. it was gorgeous mint state something... beautiful coin... he said he'd let it go for $700.00 I said sorry out of my price range and that I had already spent my coin money on other coins. thanked him for the eye candy and left. some day I will get a nice 1. to many other world coins on my want/need list now. lol

Nice group. The mint had a tough time getting these to strike well. That has to be taken into account when grading them.

    Yeh.
Don't forget they are CuNi and the Mint was probably still having trouble with that alloy.
And maybe the fact that they were the first small cents contributed.

grade is a subjective opinion only and these 3 are all coins I like and the 2 I purchased already in a slab I bought for the coin inside and decided my own grade. The ANACS I submitted a decade or so ago.

The 1857 ANACS called VF30 it seems about right at 25/30 ANACS on circulated
type coins seems to be very consistent. I have a lot of the old small slabs.

The 1858 small letters PCGS called it a VF25. I think it is closer to Fine and bought it as a Fine 15 on a good day maybe they would give it VF20 as a gift , VF25 is perhaps a little generous on this coin even more so considering the reverse.

The 1858 Large Letters PCI called VG8 I think its Fine 12-15 they were very tough on this coin. I like the clashing and lamination on the reverse very common with these coins.

    Nice set!!
I LOVE the FE's They are still my fav coin. My very first trade was for one, I was probably 14 or 15. There was a small coin show at a community center near me. I saw this and talked a good while with the person who had it. When they said they would consider a trade for some of my wheat's I rushed home and got 5 rolls of duplicates and some steel cents that I had and the rest is history.

I started an IHC set several years back.
Not surprisingly I decided to include the three reasonably collectible FE's.
    Here they are:

Oddly enough, the third coin (1858 SL) is graded the highest of the three.

even #3 is great. after taking another look #3 looks the most natural toning.

Flying Eagles are fun. Lots of varieties for just a three year issue.
