Hey all, I've been looking around at some of the big name online shops. Some of them have 'deals' or 'sales' sections, but it isn't usually anything of particular interest to me. Some sites seem to have short lived "day sales" and things like that where you can save a few bucks, or maybe snag some shipping deals. I've always been big into the online 'deal hunting' with various sites (like slickdeals/fatwallet stuff) and even was into the daily deal sites (like woot) for a while. Just curious if you guys see any good deals/sales pop up anywhere from time to time as I increase my purchasing spread from just ebay.
Best places to browse/shop and find bargains is at brick and mortar shops or at shows. Otherwise, really hard to find.
Competition is FIERCE. I see great sales all the time. Now that Apmex has partnered with eBay, including free shipping, the resulting bullion prices (for 1 or 2 days) are really hard to beat. But you probably want coins, not bullion.
Best bargains = 2 p.m. at a smallish Saturday show where there's been a sparse crowd and a drenching rain all day.
I CAN say, stay away from the Big Box ads that advertise specials that read "Premium Quality B.U." Many, many times these are low priced cleaned coins but they will not state that fact. You folks who read N.N. know who I am talking about. I learned the hard way and you should not have to.
I do like some of em... Wouldn't mind picking up a Britannia. But I don't collect mass quantities for silver investment. I always seemed to find better pricing on that stuff from MCM over Apmex but I'll look again.
A couple posts on local shows... I'll have to see if I can find an ad or something for one.. Not really sure how to find one. My very close LCS was low on selection and poor on attitude unfortunately. Not welcoming at all to newcomers. Checked out another a little further out but pricing was pretty high, and they carried mostly stuff beyond my price range of interest. Still have a couple others I'll be checking about thirty minutes away.
MCM has been sold to a television marketing firm. Proceed with caution. A CoinWeek Breaking News Report… Surprise Sale Shakes Up Modern Coin Marketplace… On May 3, 2015, CoinWeek received word that the Lakewood Ranch, Florida-based company ModernCoinMart was to be sold to Asset Marketing Services, LLC. If true, the sale would make ModernCoinMart the fourth major numismatic-related business for Asset Marketing Services, which also operates GovMint.com, First Federal Coin, and New York Mint. A request for confirmation of the sale by ModernCoinMart came in an email on May 8, 2015 from MCM General Manager Andrew Salzberg, who wrote: ModernCoinMart was acquired on May 4 by Asset Marketing Services. They saw MCM as a complementary addition to the AMS family of companies, recognized the strength of MCM’s e-commerce capabilities and rich history in modern coins and precious metals, and saw an opportunity to invest in MCM’s continued growth. Moving forward, MCM will continue to operate as a stand-alone company, with current staff remaining in place. John Maben, former CEO and owner, will transition out of the day-to-day operations but continue to support MCM in a consulting role. Jay Rudo, Hayden Tubbs and I will continue in leadership roles at MCM. MCM customers can rest assured knowing that our core values and emphasis on positive customer interaction and competitive pricing will remain unchanged. Backed by the financial strength and resources of AMS family of companies, we also look forward to continuing to improve the customer experience and deliver an even broader array of products from the mints from around the world. CoinWeek will continue to follow this story as details develop…
Same coins, good price. Not sure why it matters who owns 'em. I've also been checking out Great Collections a lot lately. They have a cool 24-hour deal that changes every day... not always a huge sale, but you never know I guess. That one is my favorite to check right now--haven't found anything like it.
How does one orchestrate a transaction on a forum but keep it safe for the seller and buyer? Would the seller have to sell via a quick ebay posting?
Tater, if the Russians bought General Motors, would you buy a new Corvette next year? Not sure why it matters who owns 'em...
That isn't comparable. It would be more appropriate to ask me if I would buy from a Russian dealership. MCM is a distributor and not really making the US coins. Is Asset Marketing Services a Russian company?
I have bought hundreds of times on forums. I suggest when seeing a listing you want to buy if the seller is not known to you: do a search of what they have posted ask for references Pay by regular pay-pal ask any questions before you buy and follow through when price and terms are agreed to. Never back out consider it a hand shake. People who back out become known and many will not buy from them or sell to them including me. this is just my opinion and experience.
Dr. Eugene Bruder at typecoins.com has a "priced to sell" section on his site. You won't find uber bargains there, and sometimes his pictures aren't the greatest, but he's a far far better numismatist than a photographer. His web site is kind of terrible looking but relatively easy to navigate. His grading is spot on and he has an eye for quality. I've met him and, if I had that kind of money to throw around, I would have bought every coin in his case. Also, he's a former grader for one of the big 2 (don't remember which one). I highly recommend buying from him.

Knowledge is the best bargain you can get. For instance if a seller does not know what he is selling in particular varieties, you may be able to grab a deal there.
I'm not familiar with the specific ads you're talking about, but I pretty much stay away from people who advertise nationally in general. Either they have a lot of problem coins to move, or their prices are way higher than anyone else. I generally stick with coin shows, and most of the dealers I buy from either don't advertise or just have a web site.
I know exactly who your talking about, have bought from them and would again but with shipping charges being so high, would look elsewhere first.
