That's the sad part as they're missing talking to knowledgeable collectors . Also there's nothing like seeing coins in hand when talking about altered surfaces , fakes or just about any subject at all .
I think it was somewhere in the Rochester area. The name of the place escapes me currently...but they had an excellent assortment of all coins, including ancients, which the guy actually gave me a lesson or two in while I was there.
Apologies for sidetracking things OP........thanks Frisco. I never get up quite that far. Mostly southern tier.
Good to see the young man get his card! I am 70 years old and still have my "junior member" card from when I was that age joining the Baton Rouge Coin Club. First time I had joined anything. There were auctions often with coins for the juniors. Bought a lot of coins from the 'junk bins' of the older guys and sold them for profit to buyers in Coin World. Most of the older guys had time to chat with the youngsters but a few were a bit grouchy. Guess things don't change much. Many good memories from these days. Club would have presentations on different series of coins, medals, paper money etc. Best of collecting to that young man and glad he is getting support from his family! I love Coin Talk.
I wish their was a coin club where I live, I would totally join, I'm a new collecter so it would be nice to know Some stuff.
It was cool being the youngest EAC member at the EAC convention this year. I wish more kids would join though, early copper is great.
There were three other junior members there that night as well. (Among an attendance of 72) So that was about 5% of the attendance.
I imagine that dealers don't always appreciate actual collectors because they can't pass off that "AU" coin that's actually a problem VF+ coin and make a big profit margin.
I'm 35 and I've been at this for 2 decades. I'm not part of any coin club outside the internet but, I wish I were. However I do meet with a couple of friend at coin shows a few times a year. That is when I get to talk coins face to face and enjoy similar company.
The nearest coin club to me was 45 min away (without traffic) and they have meetings on Thursday nights. So i would probably get home around 945 ish and with school the next day it wasn't going to be possible! That's why i started my own coin club!!! It not too big but its fun to chat about coins. I wish more people went. I have about 1 serious kid and 4 "state quarter" kids if you know what i mean. It's a good start though. I think cointalk is the best "coin club" there is!
