It's pretty easy to twist people's words around and take them out of context. It's also pretty easy to misunderstand the tone of a comment when it is written instead of spoken. So when you are unsure, or a comment could be taken in more than one way - the respectful thing to do is to give that person the benefit of the doubt instead of pointing fingers. Of course there are also those times when there is no doubt - like your comments swick. The posts will stand because it is important that everyone knows criticism of moderators is not censored here. Personal attacks - on anyone - are however. Fair enough ? I would like to ask a question though - where is it written that moderators are required to be perfect ? They are just human lke everyone else, and as such they make mistakes also. Just like you have - now let it go at that.
Well, swick I will sure hate to see you go. BTW, I have a few firearms myself. Take Care & Good Luck Ben
Hang on here, let's get back into talking about coins.Yes,slaves were used to strike coins by most civilisations. In England, villeins were used to work in the mints, which quite a number of towns had. Some churches also had mints, espescially at York & Canterbury. Aidan.
So sorry hamman88. You're right. So sorry I got on my soap box and started raving like I did. This is your thread, and I messed it up. PLEASE accept my sincere apology. swick
NO! dont be sorry, this was really ammusing! Although when my english teacher checks out my citations and visits this website she'll wonder why I cited this. HI MRS. BRUNER !!!! GIVE ME AN A++++!!! THESE PEOPLE ARE VERY CREDITABLE, DONT THINK THAT THEIR INFO IS WRONG.
I won't believe that for a moment. Yes slaves did physical labor, but so did the poor and lower class free men as well. I can't say much about populations in ancient Rome, but in the pre-civil war south only a minority of the population owned slaves. Slaves were expensive and you had to have a fair amount of money in order to afford to purchase, house, and feed slaves. And I'm sure these poor, lower class, and low middleclass people didn't just sit around all day hoping that someones slave would do their work for them. Much of the non-slave owning population did plenty of physical labor too. As far as I know there were no slaves working at the pre-civil war southern mints. (I wouldn't be surprised if some of the officials owned slaves but theydidn't work at the mint.) Most of the mint work required people with some education, many would have to post bonds, and they would have to be trusted around valuable. It just doesn't seem too likely they would have employed slaves.
