The coin dates BC 525 - 500. http://www.coinarchives.com/a/lotvi...3&Lot=25&Val=13f20ed3ccebf5d5ae75182bb64220ac I would like the coin more if it were mine. You can bid on the one coming up estimate is only 200 USD.
Oh BTW your coin photo is...mediocre at best the coin is waaayyy more Edited: Language rules in hand.
Here is the same "mediocre" photo with revised label. There seems to be differing opinions as to when this Magna Graecia type coin was minted. BRUTTIUM, Kaulonia AR Stater 480-388 B.C. 8.04 grams, 19 - 20 mm Obv: Apollo naked walking right. Retrograde KAVA on left, small stag figure on right. (sm. stag standing r. facing l.) Rev: Large stag standing right Grade: Overall Fine condition. Obverse a bit rough with some details of retrograde letters & small stag figure lost to antiquity. The reverse large stag is VF, well centered & attractive. Other: Kaulonia was destroyed by Dionysios I of Syracuse in 388 B.C. CNG puts this coin type at ca. 525 - 500 B.C. and Wildwinds puts it ca. 470-440 B.C. Sear #462 puts this coin at 480 B.C. earliest. From Allen Berman 6/15 BTW, this is my first Magna Graecia coin from the foot of Italy. Here is a map:
CNG puts this coin type at ca. 525 - 500 B.C. and Wildwinds puts it ca. 470-440 B.C. Sear #462 puts this coin at 480 B.C. earliest. I don't have any reference books that explain dating this coin type.
I think it's the earlier incuse series that CNG have at 525-500 BC: http://www.cngcoins.com/Coin.aspx?CoinID=259322 For your series they go with 475-425 BC: http://www.cngcoins.com/Coin.aspx?CoinID=259323
Thank you Zumbly. Perhaps there is just a type-error on this CNG listing: http://www.cngcoins.com/Coin.aspx?CoinID=286743 where 475-425 or the broader 480-388 would be more appropriate. Sorry the coin missed-out on your recent alphabetical city thread. It belongs with its friends under "K".
I understand... it was being saved for the stag party . It's a lovely series, I'd like one of them myself some day.
