Last month we signed my son up for membership in the local coin club. He has looked forward all month to getting his membership card. It's given me a good laugh, not in a bad way, just funny to see him so excited about a little card....but I took a photo for posterity's sake. He won another bunch of wheats in the junior auction tonight. There was a catch though; since he won he now has to find the oldest coin in the bunch (1911) and give a report next month on what things were like in the U.S. it that year. I'm looking forward to it.
We need more young collectors, I will be 72 in two days and we are getting old there is no new blood in the group. I hope your son brings in a few new members.
Congratulations to your son. He should be excited. You should be proud. Good luck to him on his report.
Now that is really cool. I would love to get my 10 year daughter more interested in collecting with me.
Something that occurred to me recently... I'm not a child... I've been out on my own a while. But I'm quite a bit younger than most of the folks I have seen around my local coin shop the few times I've popped in. By decades. Everyone on this forum is pretty welcoming. And excited for newcomers. Especially the newer generations. But wow, are they cold at the couple shops I've been to. The guys in the local shop I've been to a couple times couldn't be less interested in giving me the time of day. Doesn't seem like a good strategy for a sustainable business. Seems like these guys should really be trying to reel in the business.
Glad to see another YN have the passion . What kind of coins does he like ? I have my nieces 6 year old girl collecting coins , and can't wait to try to get my 3 month old grandson interested .
Hmm, I haven't had quite the same experience. When taking a trip to upstate NY about a few years ago (I think I was 18) I stopped in a moderately-sized coin shop for a good hour and a half chatting up the employees and customers, too. Had a great time and it seemed to me that the people who worked there were excited to see a younger face in the crowd. Learned quite a bit about some coins and they cut me some deals, too.
About the same age when I first joined a coin club, I was sponsored by my friend's father who were both members. I used to really enjoy the auctions, sometimes getting some very good deals. One of my first buys was a roll of very nice 1909 VDBs in assorted VF to XF condition. Paid below the price that dealers in Coin World were buying them for, so I was happy not only with getting some nice coins, but at a nice price as well.
Yep, I started when I was 8. Now I'm 38 and still the youngest collector I know. Most people look at me like there is a third eye growing out of my forehead when I tell them I collect coins.
Very soon you're not going to care much about coins as there are far more important things to do. But the coins will still be there once things/you settle down.
Eh idk there still seems to be a lot of people my age that collect coins actively or have a small collection given to them by family. With this advanced technology we have today the younger folks for the most part don't bother going to coin clubs. They buy their coins online and maybe join this forum or another like it to serve as their coin club. The world as we know it is all going online my friends.
I would love to go to a local coin club in my area. St. George, Utah anyone ? or with in a 50 mile zone ? lol
Rusty right now his favorites are Kennedy half dollars and Mercury dimes. He thinks the winged liberty looks like a female version of flash so he calls them Lady Flash dimes...cracks me up. He's getting into wheats too because he keeps buying them at the monthly auction...we've gotten him a wheat folder to start filling holes in.
Very cool, I'd love my two girls 8, 6 to be able to join a local club. Although there doesn't seem to be any active within my local area last time I checked which is a shame. There is a coin show this weekend though and their going to attend the children's seminar. I did find last year though after being spoiled at the coin show my daughter who attended developed a much greater interest in the hobby.
