If you're unsure of the binder materials, you could always just get the rings, and make a front/back out of materials you know are safe (or none at all!) I've done a lot of reading about the kointains... and have determined that I'll need to check them out in person before committing to a system with them versus some of the other options. The other thing I finally learned (and feel pretty silly about) are what the inserts are... that some flips come with the actual insert for one side. Did not know that! Anyways, I'll keep checking on some page options. For Quarters, could I go with the 1.5s? I know they're bigger than the aforementioned 22mm...
You can buy the 2x2 flips with the inserts and you can also buy sheets of inserts that are perforated to size. And I also use the Brothers' label maker with 1/8 in. tape to put on the inserts for a neat look. Others just hand write on them. The white insert paper also seems to show the coin better than just the clear flip. The only drawback is the insert paper hides the reverse of the coin when it's in a binder page.
Cool, I like that you can get extras. One idea is to use two pages. Put the coins on the first page, and inserts on the second page. Takes twice as many pages, but you can still see which label corresponds to the coin (or see through the page when flat), but then you get to see the back of the coin, too. I assume the inserts are, but has anyone verified the paper/label/ink/etc coming from these label makers is safe to be stored closely to the coins? Acid free and such?
When using these pages for 2x2s, is it necessary to have every coin in a mylar flip first? Will the fall out otherwise? I'm looking to put together a simple collection of modern quarters out of circulation. Putting them all into flips, and then into pages, especially since I'm using Saflips, doesn't seem very economical. Take for instance the cost of a Dansco Washington Quarters album. About $30, holds around 166 quarters. To do this with my custom method (which I thought would save money...) 4 x 50 packs of Saflips = $31.16 (yikes) 2 x 100 packs of inserts = $3.18 9 x 20-slot 2x2 pages = $11.25 PVC-free Binder = $6 Total: $51.59 Was thinking the custom route would be more economical, and allow me to define my own 'albums' rather than get pre-made ones and end up with empty pages that I wasn't interested in. I enjoy "short sets" and there aren't really "short set albums." ... maybe I'll just grab some of those cardboard folders for $3 bucks after all...
Here's an album/binder product that can hold airtites. It has it's own pages and everything!: http://www.valleycoin.com/index.php?cPath=9_409_1482
I'm not sure airtites for every coin in just a regular, circulated quarters set, is economical either. But those are pretty nifty. Pages are sold standalone for 5 bucks... I wonder if they fit a regular pvc-free binder.
