So maybe I'm a bigger coin nerd than I thought. This past Wednesday I was playing pool with my pool team when a guy walks in and tries to buy a beer with a hundred. I was right next to the guy when he handed the bartender the money and I immediately recognized the bill to be counterfeit. I quietly let the owner know what was going on and they approached the guy about it. The guy takes off running, but several people juiced with liquid courage take off after him. Meanwhile the owner called the cops and they were on their way. We catch the guy after a few trips around the block and hold him until the cops get there. The cops cuff him and put him in the back of the car then come around to take a report. The cop looks at the bill and wonders what's wrong with it. The owner of the bar tells the cop that I told them the bill was counterfeit so he asks me what was wrong with the bill. Beyond the green being the wrong color green altogether, I point out about ten things that were wrong. I went and got my loupe out of my car by now and trained him how to better spot counterfeit bills. Turns out that this scam has lasted quite a while and has cost plenty of small businesses quite a bit. http://m.wdsu.com/news/5-arrested-in-sophisticated-counterfeit-money-scheme-in-slidell/31762002 Moral of the story: don't try to pass off counterfeit bills where coin collectors may hang out.
Good for you! Note to self: When entering a bar or poolroom, be sure to yell out......Are there any numismatists in the house? "8-ball in the corner pocket!" Chris
Nice job. Judging by the perpetrators photos, they don't look capable of anything sophisticated or complex. Perhaps that is why those words are in quotations, lol. Sometimes the authorities are on to these people and let them continue (under surveillance of course) to see who else is involved. In any case, you did the right thing in letting the bar owner know. Hope you get some recognition out of it or a free beer at the very least.
That's really cool. This makes me think of a story from about 40 years ago. This guy was being chased and it went by the front of a grocery store. About 20 kids that did the sacking and loading, all in white shirts joined the chase. I can't imagine what that poor guy was thinking while being chased by all those kids.
Great job! One less counterfitter out there. Too bad they didn't credit the "nerdy guy at the bar corner" for putting it all together.
If @GDJMSP doesn't "like" your original post, then I completely lose all respect... WOW!!! Come'on GD! He earned it and we all know it!
Well I have this little beauty on file if he doesn't. It was originally given to Matt, but I forget for what.
"Only someone with a trained eye could determine that the money was counterfeit. This was a sophisticated scheme that eventually caught up with the group. I’m proud of the investigators who worked this case. A lot of time and effort went into identifying and arresting these individuals.” Uh, did I miss any mention of Kirk whatsover?
No mention of me was missed, but that's cool, it's about time the cops get some good press for a change. It seems that this was an ongoing investigation and cops knew who it was when they got there. Seems that we just helped track him down.
