The hit ( or whatever) looks worse here. That has to knock the obverse to MS-62/3 area. I don't think it has been polished/whizzed at all, but possibly dipped, as many have been.

I say its a brilliant PL, that totally lacks any cameo look. Very nice reverse.

Some of your pics do make the coin look polished, but I don't think it is. I think it's just your pics, lighting. That said, even at $35 I think you paid a bit too much for that coin.

I agree with Doug. To me, the first set of pictures looked fishy, but your recent ones look okay. I personally don't think it will grade PL. TPG's have tightened their standards for what is PL it seems.

The last set of pics make me think that the coin is a standard MS-62 1881-S with great luster (as is very common with this date). That said, I think $35 is pretty standard for the coin....not a great bargain, but not a ripoff either.

That's a nice coin, definitely not polished IMO. 1881-S is one of the dates where practically half of the MS coins are PL (close anyways). I'd say it was a nice pickup for $35. Nice!

Be leary of Morgans that look like this, unless an early S-mint.

There must of been some real fussy guy running that mint at the time, probably stopped the presses and polished the dies every 5 minutes ?

Wow, she sure is shiny. Still pretty. If you like the coin, then I feel you paid a good price for it. :kewl: That is all that matters IMO. Nice morgan. :thumb:

Yeah...and if we don't believe that story, you'll make up another one. ;)

Tell ya what, the coat just looks a little too, well, I dunno, "fresh." Maybe dipped? But you've got a looker there; I can see why you snapped it up.

That is a very nice Morgan. The 1881-s dollars are known for being very well struck and having alot of detail as your does. Q. David Bowers describes the 1881-s in part as follows..."typically with satin luster, often slightly prooflike" in "A Guide Book of Morgan Silver Dollars". The finish does seem awfully bright, but I believe typical of the year. Here is an example of mine.......

Hey guys, I just took some new pictures of this coin and also a Washington dollar using a new method involving a milk jug...lol I was wondering what you guys thought of these photos... Oh, and I know I need to work on the flash washing out the coins...

Suggestions would be greatly appreciated =)

Don't use the flash at all, it is always just going to wash out the coin. Try to use natural lighting and experiment with different angles until the light reflects just the way you want it to in the picture. The trick is then putting the coin down at that angle and taking the picture in macro mode (the button to turn on macro should have a picture of a flower on it).

    The Coin Appears....

I don't wantg to talk out of school here but I have seen coin, particularly Morgans, that have that look and I actually have made a few. the coin looks plated. Take a closer look at the scrathes on the surface. If the coin were in such clear condition there would be mint luster but that is not luster. You can take any silver coin, acid clean it and simply reflow the surface through electroysis or some hacks I have seen tried to hot dip the coin. check the edges thats where they leave the telltale sign of this process. polishing would leave parrallel scratches. The pictures are hard to judge but I would look for microscopic flow lines from the minting process. These would not show up on a reflowed coin.
