Last night I was watching one of those Shop at home TV programs until it made me sick to my stomach. They had on there a full set of Kennedy Halves in a Dansco album, all mints P,D and S, all proofs, clad and silver. I believe they started out at $1995 or something, then, after a few minutes, like they do, they lowered the price to a more affordable $1595, but, you could do the easy option of "stretch pays" at $320 per month for 5 months. Now thats enough to put me on the phone to order a few sets. You know, its sad the amount of people that actually calls into these scammers and orders this stuff. I actually sit there and get so upset with their lies and trickery that I can only watch for about 5 minutes. Has anyone in here ever bought anything from these TV shows before you knew any better or do you know anyone who has?
I would not would not own up to it if I had. Actually I tried before I knew better . I was very lucky that they could not contact me to confirm it. Another blessing was they had sold out and I could not order it again. Think so many were returned that it took them months to sell those coins . Thank you guardian angel . I like to watch them in a entertainment type of way. Kind of like wrestling. At least on wrestling they have some honeys on Maybe they will draw some people into collecting and they will learn that you can get the same stuff for half of what they are selling it for. Am afraid they are preying on mom and pop type people who are trusting and get caught up in it. You know buying stuff for there children and grandchildren. I can relate a story kind of similar. A lady at work had a grandson. She wanted to get him a birth year coin. She went to the bank and bought a silver eagle for over $30. She was planning on getting a 2006 from the bank for him as she was now planning on getting him one ever year. She was told that it would be close to $40 . I ask her is she wanted me to get one for her for about half the price since I was planning on ordering some for myself. She did and now she has a 2006w silver eagle. thanks to members in coin talk , I was able to share this with her. Oh what a feeling.
One of the guys at work purchased the gold and platinum commemorative quarters sets from a TV program. He asks me about the price of any foreign or odd coin that he finds so when he purchased these quarters he asked me how much do I think they are worth, so I told him 25 cents. He looked like he was going to be sick. He never told me how many coins or sets he purchased but by the look on his face he must have spent quite a bit. Lou
I was also watching one last night, they auctioned off a complete set of mercury dimes in vg to vf. It was complete with 16 d and the overdate, but it sold for $5100.00. I couldn't believe it.
yeah those kill me. Suppose to be so rare but they just happen to have thousands of sets for the buyers
I once was approached by a man who said he had some coins he would like to sell me so we arranged to meet. To make a long story short all of the coins he had were purchased from tv shows, and IMHO were way over graded, he was not pleased with my offer so I suggested the best local area coin shop to take them to. His offer at the coin shop was less than half of what I offered him. He said he was going to put them in the safety deposit box and maybe in 50 years he could break even and that he was never buying another coin from a tv show again.
It does not matter if they are selling an CC silver Dollar or a 2006 Memorial Cent they are always very rare and are bound to soar in price over the next few years. I think they have a set dialouge where they just replace the coin name LOL.
I find these shows rather informative, but then again why would you buy anything off of TV! It is rather sad to be taken, but then again.. how many of you bought a 73 Pinto because it was nice and shiny, and had a pretty girl sitting in it?...
One place on TV I would ever buy coins. Why you ask? Because it is an auction format and the pictures are a hell of a lot better condition than on ebay or any other online auction. Plus you want to see somethign in particular, mintmark, date or whatever....just ask!
In my opinion Ebay is a great place to buy coins if you have patiennts and check out the seller you are buying them from (example feedback). Some of my best buys have come from ebay. I would say that I win about 1 out of 50 coins I am interested in though. Ussually a good indication is if the s&h fee is reasonable or way over priced.
I've stated my opinions on these shows many times here. I used to watch them for entertainment as well, and sometimes still will wathc for a few minutes, just to get to look at coins. I have some good news though. I used to get 4 channels on DirectV that had coin selling shows. Now just 3. One channel called something like "America's Store" is no longer available. Not sure if that just goes for my satellite provider or what. Even though it was somewhat entertaining I was glad to see it go.
