Here are a group of ancients I bought a few months back I just got cleaned. Most are Valens or Constantine. I was surprised one appears to be silver. Not sure much about them. chris
I'd love to see the "before" pictures-- looks like you did a fabulous job cleaning them! That's a very nice assortment of coins The silver coin is a denarius Antoninus Pius with Fortuna reverse, if authentic. Similar coins (from CNG's archives) ...and many more. WOW! When starting to collect ancients I bought a few parcels of uncleaned coins. Mine were almost all slugs once cleaned. You found a total winner of a lot!
1) what was ypur cleaning process? I have never tried it but i do like your results. 2) my latest, Constantius Chlorus or Constantine the Great's father and founder of the dynasty
Welcome, britannia40 ... wow, good effort on the coin cleaning (man, I hardly have enough patience to hit the "buy-button" let alone the patience required to meticulously clean a pile of dirty dimes with a toothpick!!) ... you're a better man than me!! (most are) Have fun collecting
just time if get irritated take break and do something else. i got a friend that will clean not stop until done. I let her clean most of em. wanted to be a archeologist
Almost all of your 'uncleaned' coins are in exceptional shape, high grade and full of eye-appeal----quite a surprise these days!! And you did a fantastic job cleaning them WITHOUT removing patina and details...Congrats!!! EDIT: Did you find any you can't attribute?? I suspect not, but be on the lookout for Procopius among others if you have...
great job b40! that's the type of lot that you want, you can tell from the pics there are going to be some solid coins there. lots where you can't see any details usually just end up being 80% slugs. i think i purchased a lot off the seller myself back when i was cleaning coins, based on the before pics with the red background. cost more than the usual lot but worth it. i still have a few soakin in oil, it's been over a year i guess. i'll get to them some day. here are a few i cleaned, lost my before pics...similar to your first picture of the uncleaned coins.
Very nice job cleaning those coins and very happy to see someone doing it right without ripping the patina off.
