I have decided to work toward a MS65 Walker short set and am wondering a couple things. 1. Is it more valuable/collectible if I have slabs from only PCGS or is it acceptable to intermix the slabs from NGC and PCGS? 2. Besides my local coin shop, where is the best place to get graded walkers, I am a little leary about eBay for this. 3 Any tips for collecting walkers? Books to get to learn more? Mostly because I have to trust the photos and can't hold them and inspect. I guess if the seller had a return policy I would be more comfortable.
I think you can *always* return stuff on eBay, even if they say they don't accept returns. It's one of the things that sellers complain about, IIRC.
The Complete Guide To Walking Liberty Half Dollars by Bruce Fox is a great reference. I still use it.
You could always make your own album up to hold your slabbed coins if that is the route you end up going. It would also hold more weight come time to sell your set if need be by having them in slabs. Unless eye appeal toward slabs is an issue, then no, either PCGS or NGC will be a good way to go. If you are leery of Ebay then develop a good relationship with a dealer in your area. He/she may give you a better deal some times and you would save on Pay Pal fees and shipping if free shipping were not included. Sounds like a decent project, good luck.
Thanks to everyone for the advice... I have made two more purchases toward my set. Since I am new to collecting slab sets, I understand I can register my set and be graded and have some bragging rights about my set. What is the advantage of registering my sets, and is it better to register with PCGS or NGC? Thanks, Jesse
