    Unlikely roll model

hmm.. never been inside the contests forum.. I'll go the essay route.

My roll model would be the Onion roll. I regularly have engaging conversations with many an eclectic Pumpernickel, or even Marble Ryes can throw a lucky bit of enlightenment my way.. but Onion Roll is by far my one and only roll model... because once, an onion role proved to me that ANYTHING can be my intellectual equal when I had one of my many infamous off-days.

It was the summer of '06 and the family and I were on a week long beach vacation in the Indian river area of the Delaware beaches. For those not familiar, the Indian river inlet is nothing to be trifled with on a mildly windy day when the tides are changing. The water speeds can hit 25 mph or better, and the wind 30 commonly. As I headed out, the tide was going out.. which means if you slow down and drop off plane, you're at the mercy of the current and will flip and be swept out to sea, into the 15 foot swells (that day). I noted, as is the case commonly, all heads were pointed at me from boats and shore as I made my way. This was because at the moment, only the 40+ foot vessels were attempting to exit under these conditions. My vessel of choice for the conditions was an 11 foot, 155HP Yamaha Waverunner. It gives the novice rider the false impression of invincibility on the water.. it can do many amazing things like passing $300,000 speedboats. In the (maybe 1/8 mile long) inlet, there are 3 stationary 6-foot waves that are about 5 feet apart, and very steep on one side of the inlet under these conditions. On any other day I would jump off one, down onto the second and launch off the third easy. I decided to take 1 at a time today. Mistake. As I rode up the first I found myself looking at a sheer dropoff 5 feet straight down. The current was sucking the water into a 3-cycle sine-wave that defied gravity. I tried to launch over the second wave and went straight into and under it. when I surfaced, I was off-kilter, ready to tip over on the right and facing the third wall of water. Instinct kicked in and I turned the wheel hard left and went to full power and the craft righted itself and pulled up on plane in time to jump off the next wave. I navigated much less challenging features and made it to the relative safety of the 15 foot ocean swells. (for refference, 5 foot waters should send 18 foot boats home).

I scooted around on the swells, trying to decide if I wanted to attempt to go back in through the inlet. I'm not athletic but I am in decent shape.. riding that thing all summer will do that. The 15 foor swells tired me out after a while because you just can't stop and rest out there. I beached the thing and after telling the local game warden that theres no way I was leaving his preserve for a while and he can write whatever ticket he wants.... I sat pondering what to do next.. Ham-on-Onion-roll sandwich in hand.. and it came to me. This little Onion roll, since it's first day on the planet, understood that it had a role to fulfill.. providing needed energy and focus to a bruised and battered idiot so he had half a chance to keep a clear head about things when the time to be clearheaded was at hand. That onion roll was cool with giving it's existence for the betterment of my (and ultimately my insurance company) so who was I to throw the Onion roll's sacrifice aside for my own vanity. I decided to sit there until the tide and wind were more agreeable, despite the stares of the beachgoers, surf-fishermen, and various teenyboppers pointing at "the idiot".

Good 'ol Onion roll.. my one and only starchy roll model. I cruised in 90 minutes later without incident. Kidding aside, the challenge here was to put aside the pride and ignore the embarassment, DNR fines, the whole struggle with hauling a 700 pound deadweight across the sand and think of the family, the possible coastguard resources, and the sheer terror of a death by drowning and just accept that I did a stupid thing.. and sit there and wait for it to be safe. Idiot.

ti-99 yep! Those were like 200 bucks without the 2k upgrade haha.the game 'lunar lander' had basis in fact.. it really happened. I even saw the STICK from the real lander for sale on ebay a while back.

mailing addresses-- yeah a paranoid person might not want to tell where they keep a coin collection.. but the most valuable thing in my house is a m1991-a1 officer's model 45-ACP.. just TRY and steal it ;P

There's a point... But by the time someone finds my collection, a member of the family will certainly have came back home... :pencil: And anyway... The time one would spend planning to steal it successfully is probably about the time it takes to work for that money.. :rolling:
    lol
