Picked this up at the local flea market last month, just finally getting a chance to image it. Got it from the same guy that sold me this 1941 D (that ended up as an NGC MS67 6FS) for $5. Wasn't going to even look at his book of 2x2 nickels...until I saw this one and thought, "Hey, I wouldn't have passed on that one!" Asked him if he'd added some to the book, and sure enough he had. This one was the best of the group..and I only paid $2 for it. I'm thinking it has a great chance at another 6 FS...although, I'm really doubt it's 67 worthy... Old Tom has a nice divot off the tip of his nose. My guess would be NGC MS66 6FS (a lovely $100 coin, at least in the price guide...) I love, love LOVE getting super nice Jefferson Nickels for super low prices! What do you think?
Is the criteria for FS designation as stringent as, say, FBL designation? I mean to say, while I clearly can see 6 full steps, I think I see a scratch / to the right of center traversing through all steps, and on the outer two thirds of the steps the third and fourth down appear worn to the point of indistinguishability. I'm not knocking it. I really like it.
While I'm happy you are finding nice coins out there, I can't help but be frustrated over the amount of times you've knowingly underpaid people, nor can I get over the amount of pride you seem to take in it. It amazes me that instead of being ashamed of your actions, you rush to display your actions and expect approval from others. What's even worse to me is when others applaud your actions. I, for one, am appalled by what you are doing on all accounts. It's one thing to get a nice deal once in a while, it's another to troll around ripping people off and then brandishing it like it's some achievement worthy of accolades. Each time I see a post like this, I find myself pondering the continued decline of morality in our society and it makes me sad. I have decided I shall no longer read your posts. Good day.
He did not rip anyone off. So I assume when you buy a raw coin, get it graded, it comes back higher - you then go back to who you bought it from and give them more money? I mean I have bought coins from my local shop, ebay or online - got them graded and made money on the coins. I mean the guy selling them is making money and his happy - what did he pay to get them? Oh well. Nice pickup. I think it will make 6 fulls steps, I can see the separation, but they run together on the left and maybe a smaller picture you could say no. Nice pickup.
All I'll say to this (for everyone else, because I should be on someone's ignore list by now) is that 98% of the coins I buy come from coin dealers, either in person on online. I rarely post pictures of the coins I find for them that I have no interest in purchasing (which I just tell them about and let the coins go.) It's not like I'm buying coins from Gramma and Grampa, who don't know anything about their coins and have asked me for help. So let's not make it out that I'm intentionally deceiving people. Just a poll of a few of my consignors I've had will tell you I ALWAYS tell them if I find a valuable variety in their coins. I'm not going to apologize for educating myself on Cherrypicker's Guide varieties, or for looking at so many foreign coins most people's heads would spin, or for guessing right on more than a few occasions, or for collecting series that I believe are undervalued (Jeffersons.) If someone from a poor family who served 6.5 years in the military to serve his country, then chose a career goal (as a teacher first and artist second) that many ridicule but enables him to serve younger people as a teacher, and who finds a hobby that allows him to make enough money to pay his bills...is an example of how morality in our society is failing, then I seriously wonder how this person would react if they ever watched the news or left their house. (No, I'm not Mother Theresa. Let's just get that out of the way.) I DO hope everyone here has a good day. For those of you who are still listening, back to the discussion of the coin. Looking at the coin in hand, the bottom step is a bit smushed by the 3rd column...but still completely separated from both lines above and below. There are also a few small dings slightly to the right of the 3rd column, all very minor and none crossing over a step line. I believe what you are seeing is a reflection of either the toning or the metal that the camera is picking up as a scratch...kind of like a "woodie" wheat cent...because under 10x magnification, there isn't a scratch there. I apologize that my photos haven't quite captured it - always a work in progress.
You get the award for dumb post of the day. If he went to little grandma's house and made offers to her for her collection, you might have a point, but to pay someone what they are asking?!?! Especially a business person who has a booth set up?? No ripping off at all involved here! Who gets to decide how much should be paid, and if it is too much or not enough? Dear gosh, you sound like a socialist.
@jwitten - I agree with your points, but not with your tone. No need for name calling. (PLEASE understand I'm not trying to be "lecture-y", or pretend to be a moderator - just don't want the thread to devolve into a name-calling argument like, for example, every single thread in a sports or technology-themed forum. All I'm saying is that we can disagree/argue without crossing into personal attack territory.)
I do not know much about nickels, but from looking at the pcgs price guide, this coin would only be worth $21 if it went MS66 and no full steps, correct? You are the one taking the risk grading it, and putting up even more money to get it graded. It is possible you could LOSE money if it grades a little worse than you hope. How again are you ripping someone off exactly??!?
I'd comment on this post, but since I once got a silver dime in my change from the self-checkout, and I haven't paid the additional $1 I owe to the grocery store or the change-machine manufacturer OR any of the people who recently spent that dime without noticing it, I guess I don't have moral standing to do so.
@stldanceartist Dude, obvious point of advice. Post the coin, but not the price you paid for it from now on I would get ripped a new bunghole if I included the paying price along with some of the foreign coins I've posted. Haters will hate.
Nice pickup. I voted MS66 but no FS. Assuming the diagonal lines in the steps in the area above and between C and E in 'MONTICELLO' are not dings of any sort, I'm still seeing some crumbliness of the bottom step and general mushiness above N, especially steps 3 and 4. There's a possibility that might still fly because we're looking at a pic of much higher magnification than would be used to look at the coin in hand. It might be worth sending in to round out a submission at economy tier. Oh, and BTW, anybody who has a problem with buying these for $2 from a coin dealer or vendor at a flea market better ignore me, too. That's all I'm saying.
Here is a black & white shot of the steps using my LED flash ring (better details.) Change anyone's mind?
If this is "ripping people off", I'll do it all day to coin dealers who refuse to inform themselves on varieties, RPM's, proof diagnostics etc. They sold it for what they wanted and you bought it for what you wanted. Good eye. Looks MS65 FS to me.
I agree with seetlite86. If anybody has bought a coin from me that is worth more than i sold it, then they should mail me the difference, or send it to my pp account.
7 years and 2 year long deployments in and still serving, so I think we can get past whether I am questioning your life choices. I'm just asking that you please stop bragging all the time about how you've got one over off someone else. Just post the cool coin and show it off, even tell us where you got it, we don't need to know how cheap you bought it and how you just love, love, love getting super nice coins at super cheap prices. How would the person selling the coins feel if I printed and handed him the posts you've made about your purchases? Just try having a little more class (pun intended from your current position) and omit the unnecessary parts where you brag about it. As I started my post, I'm happy you're finding nice coins, but you're going too far in your celebration.
