Hmmm, Well, let me say first, DO NOT SELL IT FOR 1500. That offer is far far too low. The rims don't appear to have that look that many do from being in a bezel. The coin does appear to have somewhat slightly cleaned surfaces. A 1875-cc is a key date, and that may play a role in it. If it were my coin, I would send it to NGC with the option of them sending it to NCS if NGC decides to bag it for cleaning or altered surfaces, or perhaps even damage from being in a bezel. I can't see any signs of tooling or casting etc, so I believe it may be genuine. If so, it is at least a 5 figure (over 10k) coin most likely. If NGC did decide to grade it, I could see a grade anywhere from au-58 to ms-62.
Good point. I agree. However, I'm also concerned about the "bejeweled" aspect. Yes, it looks pretty good in the photos... but we can't see the edge. You might score with PCGS, but with NGC they can reroute it to NCS rather than bodybag it.
If it was my coin I would send it to PCGS as if it grades it will be worth much more than the offer the guy gave you. So you really have nothing to lose, you can always get $1500 for that coin on any day of the week, but to maximize your value you want it graded and at least try and see what happens. And if it graded my guess is it could be worth over $5000 as a minimum.
Thanks for the info everyone. I was thinking of doing the 24hr walkthrough at NGC. It just seems like alot of money to do it through mail. With insurance and all. $100 for membership, Insurance prob isn't cheap. The key thing is sending my coin through the mail and it being away from me for a couple weeks. It just makes me nervous in the mail. Has anyone ever have problems with lost items etc..This is my first grading. I did find the only MS63 by NGC (the highest grade for this coin out there) sold for $103,500 in jan 07. Hope everyone has a great weekend and I'm off to work. Thanks again all, Tommy
When sending the coin in the mail send it Registered <sp?> mail. That is totaly safe and you won't have to worry. That is how the grading companies also mail the coins back. I think insurance for Registered is also cheaper.... Speedy
I may be incorrect, but I believe you can save yourself the 100 dollars for joining NGC, by instead joining the ANA for 35 dollars. I'm fairly sure ANA members may submit directly to NGC.
You can save more money----do you buy or sell on Ebay?...if so you can send it in to NGC and they won't charge you for a "membership".....there are some guys here that do that all the time. I'm an ANA member so that I how I send in mine!...speaking of that...I should have some coming back to me here soon!!!! BTW---If it would come back Bodybagged (not gradeable <sp?>) don't feel bad....I've got 2 coins coming back from NGC that more than likely will be BB'ed...but I hope not The only reason I sent them was that they were key dates (not as $$ as this coin of yours) and I'm hoping they will look past the old cleaning and see a market acceptable coin. Speedy
Speedy is right about sending the coin registered mail. That is absolutely the safest way to send it. But go to a Post Office not a contract station. Our Post Office just closed down one of these contractors in our area for some irregularities in the way they did business. Lou
Nope---as long as you have an ID with Ebay you can do it.... PS---if you fill the form out online (with the link I posted) I think they take 10% off your bill Speedy
I'd be surprised if PCGS slabbed your coin since the dings on the rim at 9 o'clock on the reverse give away the fact it was in a bezel. That combined with the cleaning mean it belongs in an ANACS or NCS holder. Even so it is likely one of the finest known of fewer than 100 extant pieces, and quite valuable, assuming that it is genuine. Without viewing the coin in person I cannot offer an opinion on its authenticity except to say that it is extremely well struck for an issue known for being one of the weakest struck pieces in the series, which is somewhat concerning to me. Anyway, your next step is to have the coin professionally certified, at which point it will be somewat easier to fix it's value.
Cave thanks for the info, there is a small ding at 9 o'clock on reverse, but it is not from the bezel. I dropped the coin from my kitchen table and it hit the floor!! Amazing huh I had no idea how valuable the coin was and I guess I was a little careless with it. I still can't believe how nice the coin looks for being 132 years old. I did find out it is authentic through a local dealer. I have yet to find one on the net that has the same detail as this coin. That is why I thought it wasn't real, but it is Thanks again cave for the input. Tommy
Is it possible that it could have sat in that particular type of bezel without obtaining any rim damage? If so, that would be outstanding from a valuation standpoint. This is definitely a big money coin, assuming it is authentic. Whatever you decide to do, take your time and please do not clean the coin in even the least little way.
Well I joined the ANA and submitted my form through NGC with my ANA membership info. Just waiting for NGC to send me my account # to submit coin, not sure how long it will take. I did take the coin to a dealer and he did say it was authentic so we shall see what it comes back. I will keep you guys informed, and thanks again for all your help! Wish me luck, Tommy
