A guy I work with just took a trip down to Alabama and picked this up. I thought it looked fake. Any idea?
It looks die cast to me. I'll add a photo of the original Confed. Half in a moment so all can compare.
There are, I believe, four or five original confed. Half dollars, and a number of restrikes made in white metal and silver from the 1870's. All die struck.
I found one just like it on eBay that sold for like $10. I was surprised that it sold not having anything saying "copy" or "replica". They don't look much like a genuine half
These are common souvenirs. It looks like you paid $15 according to the holder? I have no idea how much these are worth, but $15 retail is probably a reasonable approximation.
Couldn't be more casty lookin' if it tried! They are sold as souvenirs, and I've seen much better before. Saw these at Stuckey's, Cracker Barrel or someplace like that for around $5?
This is even a bad fake. E-bay is becoming the place for fakes anymore and if you report fakes to them nothing is done about it even though it is totally against their policy. It's become all about money. Colonial's seem to be the favorite for the crooks to list because of simplicity to fake so if it's not graded by the top four or you don't know the seller, you need to avoid like the plague...
