Hello all! In about a week I plan on heading out west where my collection (and the rest of my possessions...) are located to bring them back to NC. I've hired one of those moving Pods to do the job - do you think it would be better to stash my collection in the Pod to move it, or get it on the plane? I worry the collection may be too big to fit in my carry-on luggage, and I certainly don't want it in the checked luggage! My collection is in 2x2s in binders, and I am concerned about it being in the pod for a month as it moves from the dryness of western deserts to the humidity of NC. So, any thoughts? Pod? Force it into carry-on? Put up some better shipping costs just for the coins? I appreciate any advice! -FN
I have moved my collection about 10 times in military pods . I packed each book sealed with plastic wrap/bag then fill box with rice. Graded coins get a few Ngc or Pcgs boxes for them but hide them within your other items. Do Not tags boxes with coins. Make sure you have it sealed by moving company and take a photo of seal.for when you get it back, make sure seal it's as you have in photo.
Maybe do as you were thinking. Split it up. Take some with you on the plane. Put some in the moving pod. Send a care package back east insured. Package each accordingly.
Careful of wide temperature swings, in addition to humidity. Temperature swings can create small moisture spotting on your coins, giving your copper-based coins brown spots.
When I move, I drive to the new location. My recommendation is to bring with you anything you can't bear to lose. I'd rather carry 50 lbs in my carry on than lose my 1864-L rotated Die Wheat Cent. I'd much rather have the TSA agent dig through my bag and ask me about my coin collection than the mover dig through and not mention it. Whatever else you can't carry with you, use those gel bags that eat oxygen and humidity and pack them so they don't jostle much. Whenever I moved, I shipped most of my goods, but due to concerns about temperature, humidity, etc, I brought my collection in the car with me and put it in the back seat so it could have air conditioning. I then lugged each box up to my room every night to make sure they're not stolen or affected by the temperatures. It's tedious, but it works for me.
Thanks Seattlite - I wish I was doing the move by ground this time, but costs and circumstances dictated my current plan. Mlov's advice on temp. Is good too - may need to do some kind of splitting... I definitely plan on having my really valuable coins with me on the plan, it's the bulk of the rest I'm concerned about
Seattlite86, I'd love to see that 1864-L Rotated Die Wheat Cent of yours. I'll show you my 1864-L Rotated Die Indianhead Penny....I think you got in a hurry there with the description...lol
Came here to post that. Very important thing a lot of people forget, even when storing coins when not moving.
I moved way too many times. Tell the guys loading the van that your least necessary goods are in the box where you hide your coins. So ask them to load that box it in the very back of the van, because you won't need it for awhile. This way if they are determined to open a few boxes, they will be less inclined to dig through a hundred boxes, patio furniture, etc. to get to the very back of the trailer.
I'm not sure if the tagging worked, so I posted a photo of mine on this link: https://www.cointalk.com/threads/post-a-favorite-coin.264410/#post-2164014
+1 to driving them..... I packed all my coins and drove them from IL to Dallas*. With 3 pups and the wife in the car for 14 hrs.
