Does it take both, the horses head straight out to the left and the horseman on the ground to make FH1? .......I want an FH1 someday.
FH1 is defined as horseman kneeling on the ground. FH4 is slumped over grasping horse's neck. The head straight out is just my observation. As I said, some will call my Thessalonika coins FH1 but I don't.
If you like the globe obverse I'm sure the hut reverse series will be easier to find and all have the left facing globe holding bust.
Thanks for the heads up! I clicked on so many auctions with the horse reverse as the main photo with no luck. Still looking for the right coin, but that's half the fun. My favorite so far had the globe on the obv. and a soldier standing over a pair of captives on the rev... the two sides seemed to work really well together, thematically.
Nice find! The portrait style is really nice for the type/mint/period too. Closest I have is Constans.
I just won this FH of Julian - I came across it on eBay this afternoon. It's not really worth another thread, so I'm going to ride John's coattails. It would seem that the FH's of Julian are all pretty scrappy, so you take what you can get. I put in a very half-assed bid on this one and managed to win it for $19. The offerings on vcoins at the moment aren't much nicer than this coin, and quite a bit more expensive. So, taking what I can get from these coins, it has a very nice portrait of Julian as Caesar, just after Constantius II sent him off to Gaul. This is the second series, with M behind bust, and it's got a nice, clear mint mark, AQTpalm. RIC records examples from first and second officinas for Constantius II, only third for Julian, so it looks like there was a division of labor there. RIC VIII Aquileia 223 (p. 336). This is actually very nice for the type. If you don't believe me, check Wildwinds and vcoins.
Here is another I need to re-shoot, but it's a Julian from Siscia. JULIAN II AE3 OBVERSE: D N IVLIANVS NOB C, draped & cuirassed bust right REVERSE: FEL TEMP REPARATIO, soldier standing left, spearing fallen horseman who is wearing Phrygian helmet, reaching backwards, M to left, mintmark DSIS Zigzag. Struck at Siscia 355-360 AD RIC 370
After I posted the above coin, I went to look for it to take a new photo, but I can't find it, nor is the location annotated in my catalog (kinda like the Dewey decimal system). So, in other words, I no longer have this coin and may have sold it or given it away to one of the YNs. If you currently have this coin, let me know will ya. I'm telling you as a warning, backup your files as often as you can. That computer crash was horrible, and putting everything back together will be the death of me yet.
Bing, it's interesting that yours (or what used to be yours) has the obverse legend break usually associated with an Augustus: DN IVLIAN-VS NOB C. Mine has the continuous inscription typically associated with Caesars: DN IVLIANVS NOB CAES.
Here's a Julian FH in the more typical condition. It was about $8, but for anyone looking to buy one, please pay $19 and get the JA version if you can. Nice score, btw .
Just a couple compared to Dane and Doug http://www.catbikes.ch/helvetica/feltemps.htm http://www.forumancientcoins.com/dougsmith/fh.html
Yours is sharper; mine ($10 in 2009) is rounder. Combine my flan with your preservation and we would have something to crow about.
