Saw this on ebay, and put in a semi-low bid. I think it is a neat piece that looks like it was carried as a pocket piece. Just paid, so have not seen it in hand yet.

The reverse doesn't look right on the gold dollar, lots of fakes out there .. hopefully its made of gold ...

I was wondering how long before someone questioned it's authenticity, LOL.

Looks right compared to the many others I've bought. Just some wear. What looks off to you?

That is a very strange but very interesting piece.

I probably would have bid on that myself if I had seen it. Excellent look to that well worn 1853 $

The reason I said something isn't right, with all the wear on this coin where are all the scratches, nicks, but the biggest thing is why is the date so weakly struck, and the wreath isn't or the one dollar logo, I've seen lots of fakes on theses kinds of coins ....

Could be a Type 1 standing liberty to boot! Nice find anyway.

Your thinking of the 1854 theres 2 types, the 1853 only has 1 type .. also the other 3 mints had some issues with the 1853, ( C, O, D, ) but philly wasn't one of the mints with issues ....

No, I am referring to the quarter in which the gold piece has been mounted. No apparent stars below the eagle on the reverse.

It is very very common to have weak dates on these.

Most popular things to post on CT:
    1. "It doesn't look right to me."
    2. "Clearly it's been cleaned and scratched."
    3. "Is this an error??!?"

Pretty coin. I love the well-travelled wear - - what has it purchased? Whose hands did it pass through? Where has it been? Nice find. Useless trivia: President was Franklin Pierce. In 1853 the first practical fire engine went into service in the US, the transcontinental railroad survey began, the process for making condensed milk was patented and Gadsden Purchase was made. Enjoy your coin.

Why would he think that when it is obviously a Standing Liberty quarter, not a seated?
