Here is a couple of unusual Latvian pieces. I really like the workmanship on them. Simple Classic Beauty... Take Care Ben
Wait ... that is Zelma, not Milda. The Latvian Maiden coin was designed by Rihards Zarins who portrayed Zelma Brauere here (and on various occasions). A very similar coin in gold http://www.bank.lv/images/img_lb/naudas/latvian/jubilejas/tautumeita_rev.gif was issued in 2003. "Milda" is the woman on top of the Freedom Monument in Riga. http://www.endex.com/gf/buildings/liberty/worldstatues/SOLRiga/solrigai2.jpg Both the Latvian maiden and that monument were picked for the designs of the future Latvian euro coins. Not that those pieces will be around any time soon, but that choice shows the relevance of these themes ... Christian
But I agree, that "maiden" portrait is stunning. And about the only reason why I knew about Zelma and Milda is this page, from the Latvian Central Bank's website ... http://www.bank.lv/eng/main/all/sapinfo/coin_genesis/ ... which shows the planned "Latvian Euro Designs". Forget about that 2008 date (I think that 2010 or later is more likely), but it would be neat to see to see that elaborate coat of arms (which Ben posted in the original message) and also the maiden, plus the statue, on circulating coins.
