I'm not a big VAM nut, but based on looking at VAMworld, you seem to have the variety down. Is the die scratch from the 1 in the date to the bust there? As far as grade, it looks AU or so to me. I'd give it an acetone bath and see if some of that black stuff will come off.
I checked it out seems to be the Vam 39. Does any one know if these were paired with the vam 1 reverse?
Looks like to me theres 2 different reverses . Your has the B1 reverse . Vam 39 is a later die state of vam 1A .
No way no how is an acetone bath going to take away any of the luster. The worst thing it will do is nothing. Just make sure you only soak it in the acetone (no rubbing, swabbing, or anything else other than letting it soak in the acetone). There are multiple threads here on proper acetone technique, including precautions.
