This may look like a rough example of the very common 2 soldiers / 2 standards type, but it is not. By the time this series was minted for Constans, it was a short interval (several months), before the mints transitioned to the devalued 2 soldiers / 1 standard coins. This coin is RIC VII Cyzicus 114 (p. 658). An r5 coin, meaning Bruun sampled only one of its type (in the Vienna Collection). I've been trying to find these Constans two-and-two's from all the mints, just to see if it can be done. I've got six already, this one makes seven. This is the ONLY coin from Cyzicus I've ever come across in about a year of hunting. Cherry-picked for nine bucks, because nobody else knew what it was. Notice that this is a laureate, draped bust, but no cuirass. It looks like it might clean up a bit with distilled water and a light brushing.
Here is the rest of the set, from Alexandria, Arles, Nicomedia, Roma, Siscia, and Thessalonica. A couple of the mints, Antioch and Constantinople, aren't difficult, but I'd prefer to find them on eBay for cheap rather than pay retail. The new addition from Cyzicus is one of the toughest to find.
Very nice coin. It is a little rough but it may improve with some light cleaning, perhaps. Nice rare score for $9.
I dont hate LRBs, just many tend to be boring to me no matter the minor differences. We all have our likes and dislikes. They are better then lincolns or morgan dollars!! Congrats on the win though, good to see it at a special home.
