1936 is a very interesting year in Britain's history. Three kings in a single year. It must have drove the mint masters crazy in several countries. Even the Royal mint issued coins dated 1936 with George V image only. There are very few countries who issued a coin dated 1936 with Edward VIII's name or image. And if I remember correctly, not a single country issued any coin with George VI name and dated 1936. Only one Indian native state, Kutch, issued coins dated 1936 with all three British Monarch's name. To make it more difficult, the Vikram Samvat year changed during Edward VIII's period. So, they issued coins for Edward VIII with both VS dates. Here are the images of those four coins issued by Kutch during 1936 George V, VS 1992, AD 1936 Edward VIII, VS 1992, AD 1936 Edward VIII, VS 1993, AD 1936 George VI, VS 1993, AD 1936 Regards Ballabh Garg
Ballabh, those are very nice Kutchi silver 5 Kori coins. The coins bearing the name of King Edward VIII from Kutch are these - 3 Dokda,1 Kori,2-1/2 Kori,& 5 Kori. They are dated VS1992 & VS1993. The other countries that had coins in the name of King Edward VIII are British West Africa,East Africa,Fiji,Great Britain (Pattern coins),& New Guinea. Aidan.
Ballabh, there was also a Jodhpuri 1/4 Anna that was issued in 1936 in the names of both King Edward VIII & Maharajah Umaid Singh as well.I can't think of any other Indian Princely States, apart from Jodhpur & Kutch that issued coins with King Edward VIII's name on them. Aidan.
For this year, coins bearing name of Edward VIII are pretty common as they were minted for almost 10 months. King George Vth died on January 20th 1936. So, coins with his name were minted for only 20 days. And for next 10 months or so, these coins were minted with King Edward's name. And when George VI became king on December 11th 1936, the coins were issued with his name for next 20 days. So, the mintage of 1936 5 Koris with George V and George VI names are very low. There are no official mintage records available for these coins. Regards, Ballabh Garg
