Hello .. I have an undetermined year , since it was cut off , quarter in which I'm trying to find a value for .. I have posted pics beside a regular quarter for reference as you can see and any help is appreciated . Thanks , Josh
Do me a favor, try to take a pic of the edge. There are a few things that could be going on with that quarter. It could have been filed down, or it could be struck on a blank intended for another denom. Are you able to weigh it or compare its thickness to a regular quarter...
It's obviously the one in the middle. Between 2 other quarters . It doesn't look as thick now that you've said something .
With that being said, I would say it was whats left of a punch out from the process of making a coin ring. When people make coin rings, they sometimes use punch sets (I forget the exact name) to speed up the process and it leaves the person with a perfect circle of the center of the coin.
The only other thing I could think of is it being struck on a nickel planchet. Luckily there are many people with expertise on those types of errors so hopefully they will have some quality input.
If it has copper in the middle that would exclude it from being a nickel planchet. If you have the ability to weigh it, and it is 5 grams, and a solid silver colored edge, then it's likely a nickel planchet that ended up in the quarter press.
Yes I just measured the thickness and it is not as thick as a quarter or a nickel and it is smaller than a nickel but larger than a dime . From what you have said the punch out seems most feasible at this point ... wait a minute .. it's the exact same size as a penny !! it's still a little bit thinner though. Any input on that?
probably someone ground it down then. I've found some quarters that people have ground down the rims on, and they were worn down to About Good! Did you find it in a roll?
No matter how it got that way, if my grampa gave it to me, even if it turns out to be someones shop project, I'd keep it.
I honestly don't think anyone ground it down . It's way too smooth ..it's hard to get super close pics with my phone :/
I'm filling up a cent dansco album, and just last week added a nice AU 1934-d. Pretty nice find in a box of pennies. Got everything from 34 till now except 43 and 43-s out of circulation.
