Hi all! I'm in the process of trying to research 3 cent pieces but I'm not having much luck finding an abundance of information. Does anyone know of any good books on the subject? Thanks!
I was going to recommend the Flynn book on three cent nickels as well, but Jody beat me to it. I don't know of any specifically devoted to trimes (three cent silver).
Here's the link to the Harry Bass site. Under resources there's a sublink for NIP - Numismatic Index of Publications. Go there and do a search. I searched for three cent silver and got 6 hits. A search for trime produced five hits - maybe some overlap. Harry W. Bass, Jr. Foundation Website You can also try the ANA Library. Are you a member? Their website is ANA Website There are a number of auction catalogs that have some info and some books like Breen's Encyclopedia. Good luck and have fun
Thanks for all of the helpful information guys...I'll definately pursue those avenues suggested. I am a member of the ANA and was looking at the library portion of their website earlier but it seemed rather lengthy. Is there an easier way to search for the subject matter that interests me...am I just missing it somewhere? I'm primarily interested in trimes but will be looking into the nickel pieces as well, just not as in-depth. Thanks again!
Send an email to the ANA library and tell them what you are doing. Ask them to check their resources and tell you what they have. They are the most cooperative and service oriented folks I've ever met.
Hi all...just an update and a request. I spoke to the Librarian at the ANA and we were unable to find much info on the silver 3 cent pieces. Who knew that there was so little info to be found?! Crazy. Anyway, thanks for the link to the Harry Bass site Art...I did some searches and found a few articles that may be of help. There are 3 past issues of the Numismatist (Oct 97, Nov 98, Jan 01) that look promising. Would any of the members on here happen to have any of these? If so please PM me. I must say that quite frankly I am surprised at the lack of info out there on these little buggers. The librarian suggested that I compile enough info on my own and write a book myself...lol. Considering all of the dead eds I'm running into lately in this search, that's sounding better and better all the time. Thanks for all of the help offered so far, you guys are the best.
I'd also email/write/call David Bowers at ANR. He's got more numismatic knowledge than a school of dealers. He's also a great guy and very helpful. Auction catalogs may be another good source of info. I'll look and see what I have. I don't know of an index to this type of info. I don't have the Numismatist from Oct 97 or Nov 98. I do have the Jan 01 issue - somewhere. I'll dig it out. The ANA folks will usually copy an article for you (they have like a 5 dollar min fee - so get as many copies as possible). Good hunting....
Art, thanks for the follow-up. I figured since I only needed a few articles it really wasn't worth the hassle of having the ANA librarian get them for me, that's why I figured I'd check with you kind folks on here first I do have a few auction catalogs...thanks for mentioning that, I wouldn't have even thought to look there. As for Mr. Bowers, I'll have to get in touch with him and maybe pick his brain a bit. All great suggestions, thanks again for your help.
Speaking of the ANA library, everyone should see at least one of the tapes with Walter Breen. The tapes are very educational, once you get past his tie dyed shirts
