Hey guys I was checking out some coins on eBay and came across this 1938d buffalo nickel graded MS64 by PCGS. I only have a few buffalos none of which are slabbed. So I was thinking I wouldn't care to have a higher grade buffalo nickel as I do like this type of coin. So before I put in a bid I looked the coin over best I could from the photos then grabbed my redbook to get an idea on value . Only had a matter of minutes to make up my mind redbook had MS63 in the 36 dollar range so I put in a bid of 21 bucks. I didn't really think I get it but to my suprize I did. So after I paid for the coin I went and looked at pcgs price guide and it kind of shocked me that they had ms64 a few bucks lower than redbook had ms63. I understand that these price guides are just that guides but thats all I had to go by. So by me not knowing a lot about how buffalos nickels are selling I don't know if I got a good deal or not. Even though it's not an expensive coin I'd like to think I did ok. So what do you guys think ?? I know the photo is crap sorry.
While it may not feel like it right now, you've just learned a VERY inexpensive lesson. COINS DO NOT ALWAYS GO UP IN VALUE. This lesson will save you far more anguish in the future . . .
$21 is probably less than what it would cost to get a raw Buffalo graded at PCGS. I think you did ok.
I I knew that these common date buffalo nickels aren't that valuable even in the MS grades . It's just I'm not buying buffalos and watching what they sell for like I am say Barber dimes. I keep a pretty good eye on Barbers and can usually say what one will bring regardless of what a price guide says. Unfortunately I don't know the market as well on buffalos and many other series. That's when I will go by price guides and as everyone knows they can vary a good amount from what a said coin will really bring.
So what if you overpaid by a few dollars? No big deal. If you like the coin, that's all that really matters.
That's true it really doesn't matter if I over paid a little. I guess I just wanted a few opinions other than my own.
That would be a D over S mint mark right? I should receive the coin later this coming week. I will be sure to check. Since it's slabbed by pcgs wouldn't they have labeled it as so?
Attributing errors costs more money and has to be requested; it happens every now and then that people find unattributed errors/varieties in slabs.
I didn't think about that until you mentioned it. So I might get lucky and that be the case. I appreciate everyone posting.
I agree with everyone... I think you did fine on price. Best way to check current value is to check completed listings on eBay (if there are any). Nice coin.
After you mentioned that I went and added up the last 15 of 38d ms64 buffalo nickels sold on eBay. The funny thing is it came out to 32 bucks. The same as pcgs price guide for that grade.
Or you could check out Heratige at ha.com . They have great pics of the coins , and what they went for in auctions . You do have to sign up to see the prices but it's free and a great resource .
Ck for D over D as well. For $21.00 bucks is not too bad. PCGS grading fees is around $35.00 buck. So for $21 is to me pretty good.
