Hello everyone, I have been buying PCGS 70 ASE's for the last few years and I really love them. I took them out of the safe the other day and a few of them have spots and toning. All of these coins were bright white and spotless when I bought them. Is this something that naturally happens or have I done something wrong? I am one of those people who hates having spots and toning on their coins so I'm feeling a little sick. Can someone explain why this is happening. Thanks...
Safes can be very damp places. Do you have a desiccant in there? http://www.wizardcoinsupply.com/products/silica-gel-desiccant/ They would possibly tone, even if they were in a near-perfect environment.
For some reason, PCGS graded ASEs are known to milk-spot quite often. It's not covered under their "guarantee"... If you are really into ASEs I recommend you collect them in Original Govt. Packaging -- and never remove them. That is the most likely to keep them spot free -- but even that isn't foolproof.
So I guess a safety deposit box would be about the same as a safe? I'm starting to feel a little sick!!
Banks are generally air-conditioned, including every vault I've ever seen. You get a problem with a safe because there's no air circulation, and any spores or chemical contaminants are trapped with the coins.
Thanks Doug, feeling a little better!! Got some in the home safe but not the good stuff. BTW where does one get those desiccant bags? Also no one answered Coin Guy's question fully. Has the spots and toning hurt the vaule of his coins. I would think maybe the spots but reading on here, some people like toning. I'm kinda on the fence about toning..
I recommend you get the 40gm rechargeable in the aluminum holder. http://www.amazon.com/s/?ie=UTF8&ke...qmt=e&hvbmt=be&hvdev=c&ref=pd_sl_6irvd1sbay_e Chris
I bought intercept shield slab covers and boxes from Wizard in 2009. Just replaced them with new boxes last month. A little early but worth it for me. Their albums and boxes have done an excellent job keeping things clean for me. That said, proof coins are really tough to keep perfect over the long haul. I keep some in the mint capsules and stack them in an Intercept shield 2x2, sealed but in a humidity controlled environment. The proofs in the IS slab holders and boxes have stayed clean so far. I think some of these proofs from the mint are already predisposed to spot or turn white in time. Really need to control the humidity with something larger than you'd think would be required. Rechargeables like the eva dry are a must.
Yes , if a coin has milk spots and once graded a 70 , it would now grade lower . PCGS is offering an award for anybody that can safely remove milk spots without harming the coin . I too put all my best coins in Intercept Shield boxes . Slabs go into their slab boxes and they go into a larger box that holds 10 slabbed coins . I've never had a coin turn in an IS box but really don't have any proof ASEs in them .
I always dipped my ASE's before I submitted them for grading. That seemed or at least appeared to address the issue. Especially if the spotting was due to a bad rinse at "our" mint! You know, the one that belongs to US.
Funny, I seem to recall that PCGS has offered rewards for other things in the past, but they reneged on paying. Chris
