My mother having an eye for interesting things is always picking up things here and there at yard sales and resale shops and well this this time she found this coin. Does anyone have any information on it? It's metal, quite heavy and not magnetic.

I only know US coinage, but it sure looks like a casting to me. I'm guessing plated base metal.

Please don't get too discouraged until you heard from at least a few credible sources on coins such as this. There should be numerous experts chiming in on this forum very soon.

check the weight first, then see if your local brick & mortar coin shop has a gold tester (to find out purity)

My gram scale is not at my mothers, but I'll get the weight sometime in the next day or so. We do have a coin shop nearby that buys gold (My mom sold about $700 in gold jewelry that she mostly bought for .25-$2 a piece at resale shops and yard sales last year)

I got a name for the coin! It might be a 1715 Lima eight escudo.... If it's real.

Glad your Mother has a keen eye and has been lucky enough to make a few bucks in her adventures. With that said, the coin you're showing looks to be a casted fake. I wish you luck and investigate further as you have nothing to lose. Good luck!! angel9.gif

I have to say its a fake because of the differences near the 8 but just to be sure you should get it weighed.

Lima, capital of Peru. I'm thinking Peru was the third biggest source of PM's, after Mexico and Bolivia, in the Spanish Colonial Era. Anybody know for sure?

I would agree with a cast souvenir coin.

I agree too , as you can see casting bubbles .

Yep, check the edge for a seam from casting, a real coin will not have a seam.
