I recently saw this Gallienus and found it interesting enough to buy yet another Gallienus. It is quite a pleasing example with decent legends and preservation but it was the slight drapery on both shoulders that set this example apart from the piles of Radiate head types that are much more the norm. Gallienus Antoninianus Obv:– IMP GALLIENVS AVG, Radiate bust right, slight drapery on both shoulders Rev:– FORT REDVX, Fortuna seated left holding rudder and cornucopia Minted in Mediolanum/Milan (//MS) Reference:– Göbl 1350f. RIC 483
It is quite nice when a coin with a special variation like the drapery comes with such high eye appeal, surfaces and centering.
Nice looking coin for a Gallienus. Nice looking coin period. Gallienus coins generally are not so nice.
I second Doug's comment. Sometimes you have to settle for a less-than-perfect coin to acquire a particular variety. This one is outstanding in all respects.
